Introduction
This tomb in the northern Baghdad district of al-Husseiniya is locally attributed to Luqman al-Hakim, May Allah Have Mercy On Him. The site's present existence and its local fame under Luqman's name can be documented, but strong early historical evidence is not available to identify it as his certain burial place.
The Qur'an, in Surah Luqman 31:12-19, states that Luqman was granted wisdom and records his counsel to his son concerning worship of Allah alone, gratitude, prayer, moral responsibility, patience and good conduct. The Qur'an does not identify his birthplace, death or burial place. Exegetical reports differ about details of his biography and whether he was a prophet, while many commentators describe him as a righteous sage.
Early Islamic geographical literature records other tombs attributed to Luqman. Yaqut al-Hamawi mentioned an attributed grave east of Lake Tiberias and another attribution in Yemen, without claiming certainty. The al-Husseiniya site is therefore treated as a real local shrine, but historically it should be called a tomb attributed to Luqman rather than a confirmed grave.
Historical / Religious Importance
The site's significance operates on two distinct levels: the Qur'anically established wisdom of Luqman and the local Baghdad tradition that attributes this tomb to him. A responsible historical presentation must keep these two levels separate.
The record connects visitors with the moral teachings of Surah Luqman while also showing that multiple graves attributed to revered figures exist across the Islamic world. Such local traditions may be recorded respectfully, but certainty about burial requires stronger evidence.
