Introduction
The mausoleum of Hani ibn Urwa al-Muradi, May Allah Have Mercy On Him, stands beside the Great Mosque of Kufa and is treated as his recognized principal burial place. He was a senior chief of Murad in Kufa, a supporter of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib, Peace Be Upon Him, and the protector of Muslim ibn Aqil, Peace Be Upon Him, when the latter came as Imam al-Husayn's envoy. A modern critical biographical reference classifies Hani among the Tabi'in and also remembers him as one of the respected Qur'an reciters of Kufa; later shrine traditions sometimes use the broader honorific language of companionship.
His genealogy is given as Hani ibn Urwa ibn Nimran ibn Amr ibn Qaas ibn Abd Yaghuth ibn Mikhdash ibn Hisr ibn Ghanm ibn Malik ibn Awf ibn Munabbih ibn Ghatif ibn Murad ibn Madhhij. His kunya was Abu Yahya. This lineage placed him within the prominent Madhhij and Murad tribal confederation, whose Kufan branches possessed considerable military and social influence.
Hani lived through the political struggles that shaped first-century Kufa and became a man of tribal authority and public influence. Later biographical and shrine traditions associate him with Imam Ali's side in the circumstances of the Battles of the Camel, Siffin, and Nahrawan, although the surviving early notices do not preserve an equally detailed military record for every campaign. What is firmly clear is his standing among Murad and his ability to mobilize or restrain a large tribal following.
Hani's political importance became clearest during the crisis over Yazid's accession. He belonged to the influential Kufan circles that supported the household of Imam Ali and opposed forcing Imam al-Husayn into an unwanted pledge of allegiance. As messages and organizing activity increased in Kufa, Hani's tribal standing made his house a strategically important refuge. This role is securely connected with the mission of Muslim ibn Aqil; broader claims about every earlier political association should be treated separately according to their sources.
When Muslim ibn Aqil arrived as Imam al-Husayn's envoy, surveillance in Kufa intensified. Reports differ about his first host: one well-known tradition places him initially in the house of al-Mukhtar al-Thaqafi, while another places him with Muslim ibn Awsaja. The sources agree that he later moved to Hani's residence as government pressure increased. Hani knew that sheltering the envoy could cost him his life, yet he protected him and allowed trusted supporters to meet there.
During the illness of Sharik ibn al-Awar, Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad visited Hani's house. Transmitted accounts say that a plan was discussed for Muslim ibn Aqil to attack the governor from concealment, but the act did not take place. The reports offer different explanations, including reluctance to kill by surprise inside a host's house and objections from members of the household. The responsible lesson is not an invented dialogue, but the preserved fact that the opportunity was not used and that later narrators interpreted the restraint through the ethics of hospitality and opposition to treacherous killing.
Ibn Ziyad sent an agent named Maqil with money to infiltrate the supporters of the Ahl al-Bayt. Presenting himself as a devout contributor, he gained access to Muslim's circle and reported its movements. When the governor learned of activity in Hani's house, he summoned Hani to the palace. Hani refused to surrender his guest.
Ibn Ziyad struck Hani's face and nose with a staff until he was seriously wounded, then imprisoned him. Members of Murad gathered outside the palace after hearing that their chief had been harmed. The judge Shurayh saw Hani and, according to the transmitted account, reassured the tribesmen under pressure that he was alive. The crowd dispersed. The episode shows how intimidation, controlled information and the collapse of collective resolve left an influential leader isolated.
After Muslim ibn Aqil's movement collapsed, Hani was taken in bonds to the marketplace and killed. He called upon Murad for help, but no organized rescue reached him. Some historical reports add that the bodies of Hani and Muslim were dragged through the streets and that their heads were sent to the Umayyad authorities; the precise treatment is not described identically in every source. A lament attributed to Abd Allah ibn al-Zubayr al-Asadi preserved their names as examples of loyalty betrayed by political fear.
Hani was killed in Dhu al-Hijjah 60 AH, shortly before the events of Karbala. His offense was to shelter a persecuted envoy, refuse to betray a guest, and choose loyalty over political fear. His name therefore became a symbol of covenant, hospitality, courage, and support for the Ahl al-Bayt.
Hani's shrine stands beside the Great Mosque of Kufa near the mausoleum of Muslim ibn Aqil. The current devotional complex includes a domed tomb chamber, decorated surfaces, arcades and passages joined to the mosque precinct. Its continuing importance rests on a clearly identified principal burial tradition and on Hani's verified role in protecting Muslim. Visitors remember a chief whose final test was not battlefield fame but the refusal to betray a guest under state coercion.

Historical / Religious Importance
Hani's mausoleum preserves the moment in Kufan history when tribal power, political coercion, and moral loyalty confronted one another. His house became the center of Muslim ibn Aqil's mission, and his refusal to surrender a guest led directly to imprisonment and death.
His story is essential for understanding the prelude to Karbala. Infiltration by Maqil, the governor's violence, the gathering of Murad, Shurayh's reassurance, and the marketplace execution reveal how fear and deception transformed the political atmosphere of Kufa.
The shrine beside the Great Mosque preserves the linked memory of Muslim ibn Aqil and Hani. Visitors encounter lessons of covenant, hospitality, tribal responsibility, and support for the Ahl al-Bayt.
