Introduction
The shrine of Kumayl ibn Ziyad al-Nakha'i, May Allah Have Mercy On Him, in the al-Thawiya area between Najaf and Kufa is a major devotional and historical site. His name is famous in Islamic memory as a close companion of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib, Peace Be Upon Him, a figure of early Kufa, and the transmitter associated with the Supplication of Kumayl.
His full name is recorded as Kumayl ibn Ziyad ibn Nahik al-Nakha'i al-Kufi. He belonged to the Nakha' tribe, a Yemeni-origin tribal group whose members played important roles in the early Islamic history of Kufa. The intellectual and political environment of Kufa shaped his later memory.
Kumayl is remembered among the close students and loyal companions of Imam Ali, Peace Be Upon Him. Reports connect him with Imam Ali's teaching, counsel, and inner wisdom. For that reason, his name became associated not only with politics, but also with supplication, loyalty, and spiritual instruction.
The most famous devotional attribution connected with him is the Supplication of Kumayl. In Imami tradition, Kumayl asked Imam Ali, Peace Be Upon Him, about the prayer of al-Khidr. Imam Ali then taught him the supplication and explained when it should be recited. It became known by Kumayl's name because of this transmission.
The content of the supplication deeply moves readers. It contains confession of weakness, sin, ignorance, regret, hope, fear, and appeal to the mercy of Allah. For this reason it is still recited on Thursday nights, in gatherings of prayer, and in moments of repentance. Through this supplication, the name of Kumayl entered the devotional life of ordinary believers.
His political life is also important. Iraq under Umayyad rule was marked by surveillance, revolts, tribal conflict, and the harsh rule of al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf. Kumayl is remembered among those who did not abandon loyalty to Imam Ali, Peace Be Upon Him, even under pressure.
Historical reports state that al-Hajjaj sought him out. Some accounts say that Kumayl came forward so that his tribe and dependents would not be harmed. When al-Hajjaj pressed him, Kumayl refused to renounce his attachment to Imam Ali. In this setting, he was killed around 82 AH.
His death became a symbol of loyalty, steadfastness, and commitment to truth in the religious memory of Kufa and Najaf. It was not merely the death of one man, but a sign of the political severity of the age and the trials faced by loyal followers of the Ahl al-Bayt.
The al-Thawiya location is meaningful because it belongs to the sacred geography between Najaf and Kufa, where the shrine of Imam Ali, Peace Be Upon Him, the Mosque of Kufa, Wadi al-Salam, and early Islamic memory meet. The shrine of Kumayl connects visitors with prayer, loyalty, knowledge, and sacrifice.
For researchers, the site opens several lines of inquiry: the Nakha' tribe in Kufa, the companions of Imam Ali, the transmission of the Supplication of Kumayl, Umayyad political pressure, and the devotional geography of Iraq. It is therefore important for both visitation and serious historical study.

Historical / Religious Importance
This shrine brings together the companions of Imam Ali, Peace Be Upon Him, the Tabi'un memory of Kufa, and the devotional history of the Supplication of Kumayl. The personality of Kumayl ibn Ziyad, May Allah Have Mercy On Him, links knowledge, prayer, loyalty, and political steadfastness.
The al-Thawiya area has special meaning because it lies between Najaf and Kufa. Visitors encounter a geography connected with Imam Ali, Peace Be Upon Him, the Mosque of Kufa, Wadi al-Salam, and early Islamic history.
The site is also important because the Supplication of Kumayl remains a living devotional practice. The shrine is therefore not only a historical grave, but also the memory of a prayer, a teacher, a student, and the trials of an age.
For researchers, this place is valuable for studying Kufa's tribal structure, Umayyad political severity, the trained companions of Imam Ali, Peace Be Upon Him, and the development of devotional visitation memory.
