Sahih al-Bukhari recounts a striking episode from the life of Abu Hurairah, who was suffering severe hunger when the Prophet Muhammad recognized his condition and took him home. A small bowl of milk had been given to the Prophet as a gift. Instead of reserving it for Abu Hurairah alone, he told him to invite the People of al-Suffah, the poor guests of Islam. One by one they drank from the same bowl until every person was satisfied. Abu Hurairah then drank repeatedly until he could drink no more, and the Prophet praised Allah, pronounced His name, and drank what remained. Jami al-Tirmidhi independently transmits the same story and calls it hasan sahih.
Then the Prophet Muhammad passed. He smiled when he saw Abu Hurairah and, according to the report, understood what was visible in his face and what he was feeling. He called him and told him to follow. Abu Hurairah went with him to the house, where a bowl of milk had been presented as a gift.
At that moment Abu Hurairah naturally hoped the milk would relieve his hunger. Instead, the Prophet told him to go and invite the People of al-Suffah. The hadith itself explains who they were: poor guests of Islam with no family or wealth on which to depend. Gifts brought to the Prophet were shared with them. Abu Hurairah felt anxious because the bowl looked too small for the whole group, and he feared nothing would remain for him. Yet he obeyed.
The People of al-Suffah arrived and sat down. The Prophet instructed Abu Hurairah to pass the bowl among them. He gave it to one man, who drank until satisfied and returned it. Then another drank his fill, and then another. The same single bowl continued from person to person until the entire group had drunk to satisfaction.
Only then did the bowl return to the Prophet. He looked at Abu Hurairah, smiled, and told him to drink. Abu Hurairah drank. The Prophet told him to drink again, and again, until Abu Hurairah finally said that he had no room left. The Prophet then took the bowl, praised Allah, pronounced His name, and drank the remaining milk.
The report does not give a headcount for the People of al-Suffah in this episode, so a precise number should not be invented. Its power lies in the sequence itself: one hungry companion, one small gifted bowl, an entire poor community fed first, Abu Hurairah fully satisfied afterward, and milk still remaining for the Prophet. The story joins compassion, obedience, generosity, and an extraordinary blessing in a single scene.
Conclusion
Authenticity: this is a high-confidence prophetic miracle based on an explicit sahih report from Abu Hurairah and independently transmitted in al-Tirmidhi with a hasan sahih grading. Its strongest publication form keeps the hadith’s human and spiritual arc intact: severe hunger, concern that the milk would not suffice, priority given to the poor People of al-Suffah, repeated drinking to full satisfaction, and milk still remaining at the end.
