The Qur’an recounts that Abraham’s opponents, unable to answer his challenge to their idols, decided to burn him in defense of their gods. They prepared a blazing fire and cast him into it. At that moment Allah commanded the fire to become coolness and safety for Abraham, and another Qur’anic passage states plainly that Allah saved him from the fire. Sahih al-Bukhari also preserves Ibn Abbas’s report that Abraham said, “Allah is sufficient for us and He is the best disposer of affairs,” when he was thrown into the fire.

The Qur’an presents the ordeal of Prophet Abraham as the climax of his confrontation with a people devoted to idols that could neither speak nor defend themselves. After his challenge exposed the helplessness of those objects of worship, his opponents did not answer him with a stronger argument. Instead, their response became a sentence of violence: “Burn him and support your gods, if you are to act” (Al-Anbiya 21:68).

Another Qur’anic passage gives the next step in their plan. In Al-Saffat 37:97 they call for a structure to be built for Abraham and for him to be cast into the blazing fire. The Qur’an does not give a reliable measurement of the structure, the size of the flames, or the length of time he remained there. Its focus is sharper: a deliberate attempt was made to kill Abraham by fire because of his stand against idolatry.

Sahih al-Bukhari preserves an important detail about Abraham at the moment he was thrown into the fire. Ibn Abbas reports that he said, “Allah is sufficient for us and He is the best disposer of affairs.” A second Bukhari narration describes these as his last words as he was being cast into the fire. The authentic hadith therefore adds a clear picture of tawakkul at the point of greatest danger: Abraham’s response was reliance upon Allah.

Then comes the decisive Qur’anic moment. Allah says: “O fire, be coolness and safety upon Abraham” (Al-Anbiya 21:69). The miracle is not described as Abraham escaping before the flames reached him. The Qur’anic wording places the divine command upon the fire itself. Classical exegetes commonly explain that “coolness and safety” means that the harmful heat was removed without the cold itself becoming harmful.

The outcome is stated in more than one Qur’anic passage. Al-Anbiya 21:70 says that Abraham’s enemies intended harm for him, but Allah made them the greatest losers. Al-Ankabut 29:24 states even more directly that Allah saved Abraham from the fire and that in this are signs for people who believe. Thus the story closes with the attempted execution reversed completely: Abraham survives by Allah’s command, while the plan designed to destroy him becomes the proof of his deliverance.

This Qur’anic and sahih-hadith core is sufficient for the public story. Later reports about a catapult, seven days in the fire, every fire on earth going out, only his restraints burning, flowers appearing, or other dramatic details are not needed to understand the event and are not presented here as established facts.

Conclusion

The strongest sources present a clear sequence: Abraham’s opponents tried to burn him, he entrusted himself to Allah, the fire was commanded to become coolness and safety, and Allah saved him while the plot against him failed.
