Introduction
This is the recognized principal grave and mosque of Qadi Abu Yusuf, May Allah Have Mercy On Him, in Kadhimiyah, Baghdad, adjoining the wider al-Kadhimayn shrine precinct. Historical and local records identify the burial with Abu Yusuf Yaqub ibn Ibrahim al-Ansari al-Kufi, the leading student of Imam Abu Hanifa and one of the most influential jurists of the early Abbasid age. Unlike a symbolic maqam, this record is intended to carry his main biography together with the history of his Baghdad burial place.
Abu Yusuf was born in Kufa in 113 AH. Biographical works describe a childhood of limited means and an intense desire for learning. His family responsibilities at times threatened to interrupt his study, and the scholarly tradition records that Imam Abu Hanifa helped him materially so that he could continue. The incident became an enduring lesson that supporting a serious student may shape the intellectual life of future generations.
His teachers included Hisham ibn Urwa, Yahya ibn Sa'id al-Ansari, Ata ibn al-Sa'ib, al-A'mash and other leading transmitters, while his longest and most formative legal companionship was with Imam Abu Hanifa. Abu Yusuf later stated that he accompanied him for seventeen years. This training gave him command of hadith, jurisprudence, Qur'anic interpretation, campaigns and Arab historical traditions, so his learning cannot be reduced to courtroom practice alone.
He studied hadith and law with the scholars of Kufa and became the most prominent transmitter and developer of Abu Hanifa's legal method. Abu Yusuf did not merely repeat his teacher's opinions. He compared reports, examined judicial realities and sometimes reached a different conclusion when evidence or public circumstances required it. His work helped turn the early Iraqi school of legal reasoning into a disciplined body of teaching that could be transmitted through courts and books.
His own students and narrators included Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Shaybani, Yahya ibn Ma'in, Ahmad ibn Hanbal and Asad ibn al-Furat. Hadith critics remembered him as a transmitter of the Sunnah with unusual strength among the jurists of legal reasoning; Ibn Ma'in praised his reliability and preservation, and Ahmad ibn Hanbal recalled attending him early in his pursuit of hadith. This combination of transmitted evidence and disciplined reasoning helped his judgments remain connected with both scholarship and practical justice.
During the Abbasid period he served as a judge under the caliphs al-Mahdi and al-Hadi and reached his highest public office under Harun al-Rashid. Later tradition remembers him as the first person widely called Qadi al-Qudat, chief judge. The office placed him at the meeting point of scholarship and state power: he supervised judicial appointments, advised rulers and carried the responsibility of protecting litigants from injustice. His career shows that public authority is an accountability before Allah rather than a personal privilege.
His best-known work, Kitab al-Kharaj, was addressed to Harun al-Rashid and discusses land revenue, taxation, public expenditure and the rights of subjects. Abu Yusuf repeatedly linked lawful revenue with fairness, warned against oppression by officials and insisted that prosperity cannot be built by exhausting cultivators and taxpayers. He also transmitted hadith and wrote on legal disagreements and reports, helping to establish the written foundations of the Hanafi school.
Abu Yusuf died in Baghdad in 182 AH while still remembered for judicial service. His grave became part of the religious landscape of Kadhimiyah, close to the major al-Kadhimayn complex but retaining its own Sunni scholarly identity. The mosque and grave remind visitors that Baghdad's sacred geography includes jurists, hadith scholars and teachers from several legal and devotional traditions. A report from his final illness preserves his humility: he withdrew every opinion except what accorded with the Qur'an, the Sunnah and the agreement of Muslims. The report shows that high office did not remove his awareness that legal judgment remains answerable to revelation.
The educational message of the shrine is clear: knowledge requires perseverance, teachers should nurture capable students, judges must combine learning with conscience, and rulers must be advised with honesty. Visitors may offer supplication to Allah, recite for the deceased and reflect on a life in which legal learning was directed toward justice and public welfare.
Historical / Religious Importance
Qadi Abu Yusuf stands at a decisive stage in the history of Islamic law. He transmitted the learning of Imam Abu Hanifa, helped organize Hanafi jurisprudence into written and judicial practice, and gave the office of the chief judge a model that linked state administration with scholarly responsibility.
Kitab al-Kharaj makes his legacy important beyond one legal school because it addresses taxation, agriculture, officials, public wealth and the rights of ordinary people. It is an early example of a jurist speaking directly to political power about justice and economic responsibility.
His grave and mosque in Kadhimiyah also preserve the plural scholarly history of Baghdad. Beside one of the city's greatest pilgrimage complexes, the site keeps alive the memory of an early Sunni jurist whose work influenced courts and educational institutions across the Muslim world.
