Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim preserve a remarkable continuation of the Medina rain episode. After a week of heavy rain, people returned during the next Friday sermon because roads were cut off, livestock were suffering, and in a parallel sahih report houses had begun to collapse. The Prophet ﷺ did not ask for the blessing of rain to disappear; he prayed that it fall around Medina rather than upon it. The clouds then cleared over the city while the surrounding hills, valleys and countryside continued receiving rain.
During the Friday sermon, a man again stood before the Prophet ﷺ and asked him to pray—this time not for rain to begin, but for relief from its intensity. The Prophet raised his hands and made a beautifully balanced supplication: “O Allah, around us and not upon us.” In the fuller wording he asked that the rain fall on the plateaus, mountains and hills, in the valleys, and on the places where trees grow.
The prayer was therefore not a request to remove rain as a blessing. It was a request that its benefit remain while its harm be lifted from the populated city. That balance is one of the most striking features of the report.
Anas ibn Malik describes the result vividly. In Sahih al-Bukhari, the rain stopped over Medina and the people came out walking in sunshine. Another Bukhari route says the clouds dispersed to the right and left while rain continued outside the city. A further sahih wording describes the clouds clearing away from Medina as a garment is drawn away.
Sahih Muslim preserves an even wider view of what followed. Anas says that as the Prophet ﷺ indicated different directions, the clouds opened away from Medina until the city appeared clear in the middle. Yet the rain was not lost to the surrounding land: Wadi Qanat flowed for a month, and people arriving from different directions continued bringing reports of abundant rainfall.
The event thus forms a complete and powerful scene. The same community that had first asked Allah for rain later asked for protection from its excess. The Prophet ﷺ responded not by rejecting the blessing, but by asking Allah to direct it where it would nourish the land without harming the city. According to multiple reports in both Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, the change followed immediately: Medina cleared, sunshine appeared, and rain continued around it.
Conclusion
The sahih reports preserve a striking answer to prayer: when excessive rain began harming Medina, the Prophet ﷺ asked Allah to keep the rain around the city rather than upon it, and Medina cleared while beneficial rainfall continued in the surrounding land.
