Sahih al-Bukhari preserves the Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ foretelling that al-Hasan ibn Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, would be a sayyid and that Allah would bring reconciliation through him between two large groups of Muslims. The same Bukhari report preserves the later conflict setting, peace negotiations, and al-Hasan's conclusion of peace with Muawiya. Parallel reports appear in al-Nasa'i, Abu Dawud, and al-Tirmidhi, with al-Tirmidhi grading his version hasan sahih. Later historical accounts differ over whether the settlement belongs to 40 or early 41 AH, so that dating should remain distinct from the authenticated core prophecy and fulfillment.
Sahih al-Bukhari also preserves the later historical setting in which the prediction was fulfilled. Al-Hasan came toward Muawiya with large battalions, placing the two sides in a situation of serious confrontation. Muawiya then sent Abd al-Rahman ibn Samura and Abd Allah ibn Amir ibn Kurayz as envoys to al-Hasan to negotiate peace. The report concludes with the decisive outcome: al-Hasan concluded peace with Muawiya. Within the same hadith record, the earlier prophetic foretelling and the later reconciliation therefore stand together as prediction and fulfillment.
The core prophecy is not confined to a single location in the hadith literature. Al-Bukhari preserves it again in other chapters, including a concise version associated with the merits of al-Hasan and another in the Book of Tribulations. Parallel reports are also found in Sunan al-Nasa'i, Sunan Abi Dawud, and Jami al-Tirmidhi. Al-Tirmidhi explicitly grades his version hasan sahih. Al-Bukhari additionally notes, in connection with the chain of the report, that it establishes al-Hasan al-Basri's hearing from Abu Bakra.
Later classical historians connect the settlement with what became known as the Year of Unity. The exact dating is not presented uniformly in those historical accounts. Ibn Kathir records reports placing it in 40 AH as well as accounts favoring early 41 AH, and elsewhere places the settlement in Rabi al-Awwal 41 AH. That later chronological discussion should remain separate from the authenticated core of the hadith.
The strongest public conclusion is therefore focused and clear: the Prophet ﷺ foretold reconciliation through al-Hasan between two large Muslim groups, and Sahih al-Bukhari preserves a later account in which al-Hasan actually concluded peace. The verified evidence supports that connection without requiring unsupported treaty clauses or turning the event into a retrospective partisan judgment on every political question surrounding it.
Conclusion
The authenticated record preserves both the Prophet's ﷺ prediction that Allah would bring reconciliation through al-Hasan between two large Muslim groups and the later peace concluded by al-Hasan. This documented prediction-to-fulfillment sequence is the strongest established result of the event.
