Umm Salama bint Imam Hasan al-Mujtaba, peace be upon him, was a woman of the Hasanid branch of Ahl al-Bayt whose independent biography is only briefly preserved. Two early genealogical sources identify her as a daughter of Imam Hasan and as the wife of Amr ibn al-Mundhir ibn al-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam, while a later genealogical tradition assigns the same marriage to Ruqayya bint Hasan. The marriage is therefore strongly supported and probable, but it should not be described as wholly undisputed. One early genealogical account states that no child is recorded for her. Her mother, birth and death dates, later life and burial place are not securely known.
Birth

Her exact birth year and birthplace are not securely recorded. She belonged to the Medinan Hasanid household during the first Islamic century.

Death

The exact year, place and circumstances of her death are not securely preserved in the consulted sources.

Burial or attributed place

Her burial place is unknown. No verified grave or reliable early cemetery attribution was identified.

Biography and historical profile

Umm Salama belonged to the household of Imam Hasan ibn Ali al-Mujtaba, peace be upon him. Al-Mufid includes her among Imam Hasan's daughters, together with several sisters whose mothers are described collectively as different women. The available list does not identify Umm Salama's mother by name, so her maternal lineage should remain unassigned rather than inferred.

The surviving sources preserve her through her kunya, Umm Salama, and do not supply a separate personal name. Because this kunya was used by several women in early Islamic history, her identity must be stated with the full lineage Umm Salama bint al-Hasan ibn Ali. This distinguishes her from Umm Salama, the wife of the Prophet, and from later Hasanid and Husaynid women bearing the same kunya.

Mus'ab al-Zubayri's Nasab Quraysh and Ibn Habib's Al-Muhabbar both identify Umm Salama bint Hasan as the wife of Amr ibn al-Mundhir ibn al-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam. Jamharat Ansab al-Arab also confirms that Amr married a daughter of Imam Hasan, although it does not name the daughter. A later genealogical tradition in Al-Majdi, however, assigns the same husband to Ruqayya bint Hasan. The marriage of Umm Salama and Amr is therefore probable on strong early evidence, but the later genealogical conflict prevents presenting it as wholly undisputed.

Nasab Quraysh adds that no child is recorded for Umm Salama from this marriage. Beyond lineage and marriage, the consulted early sources do not securely document public activity, participation in Karbala, a precise residence, date of death, funeral or burial. Her biography should therefore remain limited and evidence-based, without expanding silence in the sources into devotional or political claims.

Historical importance and legacy

The strongly supported but not entirely uncontested marriage attributed to Umm Salama preserves a social and genealogical connection between the Hasanid household of Ahl al-Bayt and a branch of the family of al-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam. It is best presented as a probable family relationship and should not by itself be treated as evidence of a political or sectarian position.

Her profile is important methodologically because it demonstrates how a limited-evidence woman should be presented: secure parentage may be stated, the marriage should be described as probable with both the early evidence and later conflict acknowledged, the absence of recorded children may be reported as a source claim, and unknown details such as her mother, dates and burial should remain unknown.
