परिचय
करबला में इमाम हुसैन अलैहिस्सलाम का हरम इस शहर का केंद्रीय रौज़ा और इस्लामी संसार के सबसे महत्वपूर्ण ज़ियारती स्थलों में है। इमाम अबू अब्दुल्लाह अल-हुसैन इब्न अली अलैहिस्सलाम पैग़म्बर मुहम्मद, उन पर दुरूद और सलाम हो, के नवासे, इमाम अली इब्न अबी तालिब और सैयदा फ़ातिमा अल-ज़हरा सलामुल्लाह अलैहा के पुत्र और अहल अल-बैत के केंद्रीय व्यक्तित्व थे। उनका जन्म लगभग शाबान चार हिजरी में मदिना में हुआ। उनका बचपन पैग़म्बर के घर में क़ुरआनी भक्ति, इबादत, उदारता, साहस और पैग़म्बर के पारिवारिक प्रेम के वातावरण में बीता। इस सम्मानित संबंध ने उनके ऊपर बड़ी नैतिक और धार्मिक जिम्मेदारी भी रखी.
हदीस स्रोत इमाम हसन और इमाम हुसैन अलैहिमस्सलाम को जन्नत के युवाओं के सरदार बताते हैं और दोनों नवासों के प्रति पैग़म्बर के प्रेम के अनेक विवरण सुरक्षित करते हैं। पैग़म्बरी निकटता केवल श्रेष्ठ वंश नहीं थी; उसने रहमत, इबादत, न्याय, कमज़ोरों की देखभाल और सत्ता के सामने सत्य कहने की जिम्मेदारी बनाई। मदिना का उनका जीवन केवल करबला की भूमिका नहीं था, बल्कि शिक्षा, पारिवारिक देखभाल, धार्मिक मार्गदर्शन, इबादत और समाज की नैतिक चेतना की रक्षा का लंबा काल था। वे क़ियाम से पहले भी गरिमा, उदारता और जिम्मेदारी के लिए पहचाने जाते थे.
इमाम हुसैन अलैहिस्सलाम की पत्नियों और बच्चों का उल्लेख किताब अल-इरशाद, नफ़स अल-महमूम, कश्फ़ अल-ग़ुम्मा और बाद के जीवनचरितों में संख्या और नामों के कुछ अंतर के साथ मिलता है। शैख़ अल-मुफ़ीद इमाम अली ज़ैन अल-आबिदीन, अली अल-अकबर, जाफ़र, अब्दुल्लाह, सकीना और फ़ातिमा को उनके बच्चों में लिखते हैं, जबकि बाद के स्रोत अतिरिक्त नाम या अलग पहचान देते हैं। प्रसिद्ध पत्नियों में शहरबानू या शाहज़नान बिन्त यज़दगिर्द, लैला बिन्त अबी मुर्रा अल-सक़फ़िय्या, रबाब बिन्त इमरउल-क़ैस अल-कल्बिय्या और उम्म इस्हाक़ बिन्त तल्हा हैं। अलग सूचियों के कारण लेख प्रसिद्ध नामों को सावधानी से रखता है और वंशावली मतभेद नहीं छिपाता.
यज़ीद इब्न मुआविया के सत्ता में आने पर इमाम हुसैन अलैहिस्सलाम पर बैअत का दबाव डाला गया। उन्होंने इसे धार्मिक और नैतिक सिद्धांत के विरुद्ध माना और रजब साठ हिजरी के अंत में मदिना से मक्का चले गए, जहाँ तीन शाबान को पहुँचे। मक्का में कूफ़ा से बहुत से पत्र आए जिनमें उन्हें सुधार आंदोलन का नेतृत्व करने के लिए बुलाया गया। इमाम ने मुस्लिम इब्न अक़ील को कूफ़ी समर्थन की सच्चाई जाँचने भेजा। आरंभ में मुस्लिम को अनेक बैअतें मिलीं, लेकिन उबैदुल्लाह इब्न ज़ियाद के प्रवेश, भय के वातावरण, लोगों के बिखरने और मुस्लिम तथा हानी इब्न उरवा की शहादत के बाद राजनीतिक स्थिति तेजी से बदल गई.

अल-फ़रज़दक़ की चेतावनी, ज़ुहैर इब्न अल-क़ैन का निर्णय, अल-हुर्र इब्न यज़ीद द्वारा रोकना और बाद में तौबा करना तथा कूफ़ा से आने वाली पीड़ादायक खबरें यात्रा को लगातार नैतिक परीक्षा बनाती गईं। नैनवा के निकट सरकारी आदेश ने कारवाँ को आबादी और पानी से दूर कर दिया और दो मुहर्रम इकसठ हिजरी को करबला में रुकना अनिवार्य हो गया। जो कारवाँ जनता के निमंत्रण पर निकला था, वह अब संगठित घेराबंदी में था। यह परिवर्तन दिखाता है कि सार्वजनिक साहस और निष्ठा के बिना राजनीतिक निमंत्रण अकेलेपन और खतरे में बदल सकता है.
दो से दस मुहर्रम इकसठ हिजरी के बीच इमाम हुसैन और उनके साथियों पर दबाव बढ़ता गया और सात मुहर्रम के बाद पानी की पहुँच रोक दी गई। अब्बास इब्न अली अलैहिस्सलाम अहल अल-बैत के ख़ैमों तक पानी पहुँचाने की कोशिशों के कारण अलमदार और सक़्क़ा के रूप में याद किए गए। आशूरा की रात इमाम हुसैन ने साथियों को जाने की अनुमति दी, लेकिन उन्होंने जानबूझकर साथ रहना चुना। दस मुहर्रम को बनी हाशिम के युवा, साथी, मुक्त सेवक और वफ़ादार समर्थक एक-एक करके शहीद हुए। इस तरह वफ़ादारी भावना नहीं, बल्कि जागरूक और महँगा चुनाव बन गई.
आशूरा की रात इमाम हुसैन अलैहिस्सलाम ने दीप बुझाकर साथियों को हर दायित्व से मुक्त कर दिया। इस अनुमति ने मजबूरी की धारणा समाप्त कर दी; जो लोग रहे उन्होंने खतरे को जानते हुए रहना चुना। बच्चों की प्यास, परिवार की चिंता, साथियों की नमाज़ और दुआ तथा आने वाले दिन के बारे में उनकी निश्चितता ने करबला को सैन्य संघर्ष से ऊपर उठाकर अंतरात्मा, प्रेम और जिम्मेदारी की अंतिम परीक्षा बनाया। इस रात का पाठ है कि नैतिक साथ तभी सबसे मूल्यवान होता है जब मनुष्य जा सकता हो, फिर भी स्वतंत्र इच्छा से निष्ठा चुने.
दस मुहर्रम को अहल अल-बैत के युवा, बनी हाशिम के सदस्य, मुक्त सेवक, घर से जुड़े लोग और वफ़ादार साथी क्रमशः शहीद हुए और अंत में इमाम हुसैन अलैहिस्सलाम की शहादत हुई। प्रारंभिक स्रोत प्रत्येक युद्ध-क्रम, हत्यारे, रजज़ और अंतिम कथन को बिल्कुल एक रूप में नहीं रखते; इसलिए जिम्मेदार लेखन प्रारंभिक प्रमाण, बाद के मक़तल और भक्तिपरक स्मृति में अंतर करता है। इस सावधानी के बावजूद नैतिक सत्य स्पष्ट है कि अकेलेपन, प्यास और बाहरी असहायता में भी इमाम ने सत्य का अपना वचन नहीं छोड़ा। घटना के बाद सैयदा ज़ैनब और इमाम अली ज़ैन अल-आबिदीन अलैहिमस्सलाम ने कूफ़ा और शाम में करबला का संदेश जीवित रखा.
इमाम हुसैन अलैहिस्सलाम का हरम सदियों में विशाल धार्मिक, सांस्कृतिक और ज़ियारती केंद्र बना। आधिकारिक निर्माण इतिहास क़ब्र के आरंभिक भवन, बार-बार विनाश और पुनर्निर्माण, अल-मुतवक्किल के आदेश से ध्वंस और बुवैही, जलायरी, सफ़वी, क़ाजार, उस्मानी तथा आधुनिक इराक़ी संरक्षण के बड़े चरण दर्ज करता है। वर्तमान परिसर में सुनहरा गुंबद, आँगन, रिवाक़, पुस्तकालय, संग्रहालय, शोध संस्थान और ज़ायरों की व्यापक सेवाएँ हैं। आशूरा और अरबईन विशाल जनसमूह लाते हैं और मुफ़्त सेवा वाले मवाक़िब स्मृति को संगठित मेहमाननवाज़ी तथा सामाजिक एकता में बदलते हैं। यहाँ ज़ियारत केवल क़ब्र की यात्रा नहीं, बल्कि अहल अल-बैत, शहादत, सुधार, सेवा और अन्याय के विरुद्ध सत्य की जीवित स्मृति में भागीदारी है.
