این زیارتگاه در شهر العزیر، بر ساحل غربی دجله در میسان، به طور سنتی محل دفن عزیر علیه السلام دانسته می‌شود که معمولاً با عزرا کاتب یکی شمرده می‌شود. قرآن نام عزیر را در سوره توبه می‌آورد، اما میان عالمان مسلمان درباره اینکه او پیامبر بود یا دانشمندی صالح از بنی‌اسرائیل اختلاف وجود دارد. سنت یهودی عزرا را کاهن، کاتب و آموزگار تورات می‌شناسد. عنوان رایج آرامگاه عراقی بازتاب یک سنت محلی دیرینه است، نه اثبات باستان‌شناختی هویت قبر.

کتاب عزرا او را از نسل سرایا معرفی می‌کند و تبار کاهنی‌اش را از راه عزریا، حلقیا، صادوق، فینحاس و العازار به هارون، کاهن بزرگ، درود خدا بر او، می‌رساند. این نسب کتابی او را در خاندان لاوی و کاهنان بنی‌اسرائیل قرار می‌دهد. ادبیات تفسیری اسلامی نیز عزیر را عالم و نگهبان یا تجدیدکننده شریعت مقدس می‌داند، هرچند منابع در بیان دقیق مرتبه دینی او یکسان نیستند.

سوره بقره از مسافری بی‌نام سخن می‌گوید که از آبادی ویران گذشت و پرسید خدا چگونه آن را پس از مرگ زنده می‌کند. خدا او را صد سال میراند و سپس زنده ساخت. خود آیه نام شخص را ذکر نمی‌کند. بسیاری از مفسران کهن او را عزیر دانسته‌اند، در حالی که گزارش‌های تفسیری دیگر ارمیا را نام برده یا هویت شخص را نامعین گذاشته‌اند.
