آرامگاه سلمان فارسی رضی الله عنه در شهر سلمان پاک و در محدوده تاریخی مدائن عراق قرار دارد و به عنوان مدفن اصلی و مهم‌ترین زیارتگاه او شناخته می‌شود. زندگی سلمان در تاریخ اسلام جایگاهی کم‌نظیر دارد، زیرا او برای جست‌وجوی حقیقت از دین موروثی، وطن و آسایش گذشت و مدتی حتی آزادی خود را از دست داد. گزارش‌های کهن او را به خانواده‌ای ایرانی از طبقه دهقانان یا محیطی زرتشتی و بانفوذ پیوند می‌دهند، اما درباره زادگاه و نام پدرش اختلاف وجود دارد؛ جی در نزدیکی اصفهان و رامهرمز هر دو در منابع آمده‌اند. روزبه نیز به عنوان نام پیش از اسلام او نقل شده و پس از اسلام با عنوان‌هایی چون سلمان خیر و سلمان محمدی گرامی داشته شده است.

سفر طولانی او در طلب حقیقت از اثرگذارترین روایت‌های سیره و تراجم است. بر پایه گزارش‌ها، سلمان به آیین زرتشتی خانواده خود اطمینان نیافت، از عبادت مسیحیان تأثیر پذیرفت و برای رسیدن به عالمان دینی شام خانه را ترک کرد. او از راهبی به راهب دیگر رفت و دانش و درستکاری هر یک را سنجید. پس از گذر از شام، موصل، نصیبین و عموریه، راهبی صالح نزدیک بودن ظهور پیامبر خاتم را به او خبر داد و نشانه‌هایی چون سرزمین خرما، نپذیرفتن صدقه برای خود، پذیرفتن هدیه و مهر نبوت را بیان کرد. در راه عربستان گروهی از کاروانیان به او خیانت کردند و او را به بردگی فروختند، اما بردگی جست‌وجوی او را خاموش نکرد.

پس از رسیدن به یثرب، سلمان نشانه‌هایی را که آموخته بود یکی پس از دیگری آزمود. غذایی را به عنوان صدقه آورد و رسول خدا صلی الله علیه وسلم از آن نخورد، سپس هدیه‌ای تقدیم کرد و پذیرفته شد، و در فرصت مناسب مهر نبوت را دید. آنگاه اسلام آورد. چون هنوز برده بود در بدر و احد شرکت نکرد. پیامبر و صحابه برای انجام قرارداد آزادی او یاری رساندند و روایت کاشتن نهال‌های خرما و پرداخت مال نشان می‌دهد که جامعه اسلامی چگونه برادری ایمانی را به آزادی عملی یک حقیقت‌جو تبدیل کرد.

در جنگ خندق، بینش نظامی سلمان در دفاع از مدینه نقشی تعیین‌کننده یافت. نبرد در میدان باز در عربستان شناخته‌شده بود، اما سلمان روش دفاعی ایرانی یعنی کندن خندق را پیشنهاد کرد. پیامبر این پیشنهاد را پذیرفت و صحابه با وجود سرما، گرسنگی و محاصره کار کردند تا خندق آماده شد و سپاه احزاب نتوانست مستقیما وارد مدینه شود. این رخداد نشان می‌دهد که اسلام تجربه سودمند را به سبب تعلق آن به ملت دیگر رد نمی‌کند؛ حکمت درست از هر فرهنگی پذیرفته می‌شود و در خدمت خیر عمومی قرار می‌گیرد.

میراث سلمان تنها به سفر و جنگ محدود نبود. در گزارش مشهور صحیح بخاری درباره پیوند برادری او با ابو درداء رضی الله عنهما، سلمان میان حق عبادت، بدن، خانواده و مهمان توازن برقرار کرد و پیامبر داوری او را تأیید نمود. در صحیح مسلم نیز پیامبر هنگام ستایش توانایی ایرانیان برای دستیابی به ایمان و دانش، به سلمان اشاره کرد. روایت فضیلت سلمان از ما اهل بیت است نیز شهرت فراوان یافت. دانشمندان درباره سندهای آن بحث کرده‌اند، اما حافظه سنی و شیعی این نسبت را نه پیوند خونی، بلکه بیانگر ایمان، وفاداری، دانش، نزدیکی و محبت به خاندان پیامبر دانسته است.

پس از رحلت پیامبر، سلمان با دانش، زهد و خدمت عمومی شناخته می‌شد. گزارش‌های فراوان او را در دوران خلافت عمر بن خطاب رضی الله عنه مسئول مدائن می‌دانند. با وجود منصب، کتاب‌های تراجم از لباس ساده، کار با دست، زندگی کم‌هزینه و بخشیدن بخش بزرگی از عطای او به نیازمندان یاد می‌کنند. رفتار او نشان می‌دهد که حکومت وسیله نمایش شخصی نیست، بلکه امانتی برای عدالت، پاسخ‌گویی و خدمت به مردم است. تجربه فرهنگی ایران، تربیت نبوی مدینه و مسئولیت شهری عراق در یک شخصیت جمع شد.

درباره سال وفات او اختلاف است و سال‌های سی و دو، سی و پنج یا سی و شش هجری گزارش شده‌اند. با این حال وفات در مدائن و پیوند سال‌های پایانی زندگی او با این منطقه از حافظه تاریخی نیرومند و پیوسته برخوردار است. شهر امروزی سلمان پاک نام او را بر خود دارد و مجموعه مسجد و آرامگاه طی قرن‌ها کانون حضور زائران، عالمان و مردم محلی بوده است. بنای کنونی حاصل ساخت‌وساز و مرمت دوره‌های گوناگون است؛ بنابراین قدمت هر بخش ظاهری را نباید با قدمت سنت تدفین یکسان دانست، ولی استمرار زیارت هویت تاریخی محل را تقویت می‌کند.

این آرامگاه تنها نشانه یک قبر نیست، بلکه یادآور جست‌وجوی حقیقت، حرمت دانش، بهره‌گیری متقابل فرهنگ‌ها، اعتدال در عبادت، محبت اهل بیت و حکومت خدمت‌محور است. مسیر سلمان از ایران به شام و عراق و حجاز و سپس مدائن نشان داد که اسلام اخلاص و تقوا را بر زبان، نژاد و جایگاه موروثی برتری می‌دهد. به جای پر کردن اطلاعات خانوادگی با نام‌های ثابت‌نشده، مقاله مسئولانه بر شخصیت و خدمات مستند او تمرکز می‌کند. پیوند حقیقی زائر با این مکان آن است که با پایداری سلمان حقیقت را بجوید، با دانش به جامعه سود برساند و مقام را به خدمت تبدیل کند.
