آرامگاه منسوب به زید بن صوحان عبدی، خدا از او خشنود باشد، در ناحیه سیبه و روستای کوتالزین از منطقه ابوالخصیب بصره قرار دارد. این مکان حافظه قبیله عبدالقيس، فتوحات نخستین، پشتیبانی از امام علی علیه السلام و نبرد جمل را به هم پیوند میدهد. منابع قدیم مرگ او را در میدان جمل در نزدیکی بصره تأیید میکنند، ولی تعیین دقیق بنای کنونی به عنوان قبر نخستین از سنت محلی متأخر است.
نام او زید بن صوحان بن حجر بن حارث بن هجرس دانسته شده و نسبش به عبدالقيس میرسد. دو برادر مشهورش صعصعه بن صوحان و سیحان بن صوحان بودند که هر دو در تاریخ سخنوری و سیاست عراق شناخته شدند. کنیه او در منابع به صورت ابوسلمان، ابوسلیمان یا ابوعایشه آمده است.
عالمان رجال درباره جای دادن او در شمار صحابه اختلاف کردهاند. بعضی کتابها او را در میان صحابه آوردهاند، اما گروهی گفتهاند که در زمان پیامبر صلى الله عليه وسلم اسلام آورد، بدون آنکه دیدار مستقیم یا روایت او از پیامبر بهطور استوار ثابت باشد. از همین رو بسیاری او را مخضرم و تابعی بزرگ معرفی میکنند.
او از عمر بن خطاب، امام علی بن ابی طالب علیه السلام و سلمان فارسی، خدا از آنان خشنود باشد، روایت یا دانش آموخت. ابووائل شقیق بن سلمه و عیزار بن حریث از او نقل کردهاند. فصاحت، عبادت، شناخت دینی و نفوذ او در میان عبدالقيس در کتابهای زندگینامه حفظ شده است.
از دست دادن یکی از دستهای او در فتوحات از رویدادهای مشهور زندگی اوست، ولی منابع میدان نبرد را یکسان ندانستهاند و از جلولاء، نهاوند، قادسیه یا یرموک نام بردهاند. نتیجه محتاطانه این است که دست او در یکی از نبردهای بزرگ قطع شد و او پس از آن نیز به خدمت دینی و اجتماعی ادامه داد.
بعضی کتابهای مناقب گزارشی نقل کردهاند که بخشی از بدن زید پیش از او وارد بهشت خواهد شد و نویسندگان بعدی آن را با دست قطعشده پیوند دادهاند. سندها و عبارتها متفاوتاند و این خبر در صحیح بخاری و صحیح مسلم نیست. بنابراین آن را باید گزارش مشهور فضیلت دانست، نه حدیثی مورد اتفاق همه.
زید از پشتیبانان برجسته امام علی علیه السلام شد. پیش از نبرد جمل، نامهای منسوب به عایشه، خدا از او خشنود باشد، از او خواست به سپاه مقابل بپیوندد یا مردم را از همراهی علی باز دارد. گزارشهای تاریخی میگویند زید پاسخ داد که اگر او به خانه بازگردد فرزند خیرخواه او خواهد بود، وگرنه در صف نخست مخالفت قرار میگیرد. این ماجرا فضای دشوار جنگ داخلی مسلمانان را نشان میدهد.
در نبرد جمل در سال ۳۶ هجری، او پرچم عبدالقيس را حمل میکرد. گزارشها میگویند نخست برادرش سیحان پرچم را داشت، پس از کشته شدن او زید آن را گرفت و پس از افتادن زید، صعصعه پرچم را برداشت. این ترتیب به نمادی از وفاداری قبیلهای، تعهد سیاسی و شدت تلخ نبرد تبدیل شد.
زید در همان نبرد کشته شد. منابع درباره نام دقیق قاتل اختلاف دارند، ولی مرگ او در سپاه امام علی در سال ۳۶ هجری بهخوبی ثبت شده است. در لحظات پایانی نیز از او نقل شده که خونش شسته نشود و لباسش از تن بیرون نیاورند تا روز قیامت با همان نشانه برای دادخواهی حاضر شود.
گزارشهای تاریخی و مناقب میگویند امام علی علیه السلام بر کنار او ایستاد و او را کمهزینه و پرفایده توصیف کرد. عبارتها و سندها یکسان نیستند، اما این خبر تصویر ماندگار زید را به عنوان مردی ساخته است که از دیگران اندک میخواست و در راه باور خود کمک فراوان میکرد.
مکان کنونی در کوتالزین یاد میدان جمل و حضور عبدالقيس در بصره را حفظ میکند. شرح زندگی زید بر منابع قوی استوار است، اما مرز دقیق قبر نخستین با قطعیت باستانشناختی معلوم نیست. این تفاوت میان شخصیت ثابت و محل دقیقِ منسوب، با احترام در رکورد حفظ شده است.
