परिचय

महान मस्जिदे कूफ़ा इराक़ और इस्लामी संसार की सबसे प्राचीन जामिअ मस्जिदों में है। यह कूफ़ा के केंद्र में स्थित है और मुस्लिम इब्न अक़ील, हानी इब्न उरवा, मुख़्तार अल-सक़फ़ी के मक़बरों तथा अनेक पवित्र मक़ामों के साथ स्मृति का एक संयुक्त परिसर बनाती है।

कूफ़ा नगर लगभग सत्रह हिजरी में ख़लीफ़ा उमर इब्न अल-ख़त्ताब के समय सअद इब्न अबी वक़्क़ास की देखरेख में सैनिक और शहरी केंद्र के रूप में स्थापित हुआ। मस्जिद नए नगर की योजना का मुख्य बिंदु थी। उसका प्रारंभिक रूप साधारण सीमा वाला खुला नमाज़-स्थल था, जिसमें सैनिकों और निवासियों के एकत्र होने की पर्याप्त जगह थी।

ऐतिहासिक विवरण अल-हीरा से वास्तु सामग्री के पुनः उपयोग का उल्लेख करते हैं। उमय्यद काल में ज़ियाद इब्न अबीह ने पकी ईंट, ऊँचे स्तंभ और विस्तृत छत के साथ मस्जिद का पुनर्निर्माण किया। बाद की सदियों में द्वार, दीवारें, मीनारें, मिहराब, गुंबद और आँगन की व्यवस्था बार-बार बदली।

छत्तीस हिजरी में इमाम अली इब्न अबी तालिब, उन पर सलाम हो, ने कूफ़ा को अपनी ख़िलाफ़त की राजधानी बनाया। मस्जिद केवल नमाज़ का स्थान नहीं रही, बल्कि शासन, न्याय, शिक्षा, बैतुलमाल, अर्ज़ियों, परामर्श और जुमुआ के ख़ुत्बे का केंद्र बनी। नहज अल-बलाग़ा में संकलित अनेक ख़ुत्बे और उनकी सरकार की स्मृतियाँ इस मस्जिद से जुड़ी हैं।

मस्जिद के भीतर इमाम अली अलैहिस्सलाम से संबद्ध मिहराब, दक्कत अल-क़ज़ा, बैत अल-तश्त और कई मक़ाम हैं जिन्हें भक्तिपरक परंपरा पैग़म्बरों, फ़रिश्तों और इमामों से जोड़ती है। वर्तमान ज़ियारती मानचित्र हज़रत आदम, नूह, इब्राहीम, अल-ख़िज़्र, जिब्रील, पैग़म्बर मुहम्मद, इमाम ज़ैन अल-आबिदीन और इमाम जाफ़र अल-सादिक़ अलैहिमस्सलाम से जुड़े स्थान दिखाता है। ये मस्जिद-संबंधित भक्तिपरक पहचान और स्मृति-स्थल हैं; अलग प्रमाण के बिना इन्हें क़ब्र या पुरातात्त्विक रूप से सिद्ध यात्रा नहीं कहना चाहिए।

मस्जिद की सबसे दुखद स्मृति रमज़ान चालीस हिजरी से जुड़ी है। ऐतिहासिक और ज़ियारती परंपरा इमाम अली अलैहिस्सलाम को उन्नीस रमज़ान की सुबह की नमाज़ में इसी मस्जिद में घातक रूप से घायल बताती है, जब अब्दुर्रहमान इब्न मुल्जम ने ज़हरीली तलवार से प्रहार किया। उन्हें घर ले जाया गया और इक्कीस रमज़ान को उनकी वफ़ात हुई। वर्तमान मिहराब इबादत, न्याय और शहादत की केंद्रीय भक्तिपरक स्मृति है; इसकी बाद की स्थापत्य आकृति को पहली शताब्दी की बिल्कुल अपरिवर्तित संरचना नहीं समझना चाहिए।

मुस्लिम इब्न अक़ील का मिशन और साठ हिजरी का राजनीतिक संकट भी मस्जिद के आसपास घटित हुआ। उबैदुल्लाह इब्न ज़ियाद ने मस्जिद और गवर्नर के महल से जनता को डराया, मुस्लिम के समर्थक बिखर गए और मुस्लिम तथा हानी बाद में मारे गए। उनके मक़बरे आज मस्जिद के ज़ियारती परिसर का भाग हैं।

मस्जिद अब्बासी क्रांति से भी जुड़ी है। एक सौ बत्तीस हिजरी में पहले अब्बासी ख़लीफ़ा अबू अल-अब्बास अल-सफ़्फ़ाह की बैअत कूफ़ा में घोषित हुई। इस प्रकार यही भवन राशिदून, उमय्यद और अब्बासी शासन की बड़ी बदलती अवस्थाओं का साक्षी रहा।

वर्तमान परिसर विशाल और बार-बार पुनर्निर्मित हुआ है; यह प्रारंभिक काल की एक अपरिवर्तित संरचना नहीं। अर्धवृत्ताकार बाहरी बुर्ज, बड़े द्वार, रिवाक़, इवान और नमाज़ के स्थान आँगन को घेरते हैं। बाब किन्दा, बाब अल-सुद्दा, बाब अल-सअलबान, बाब अल-रहमा और बाब अल-हुज्जा की अलग ऐतिहासिक तथा ज़ियारती पहचान है। प्रकाशित विवरण सही क्षेत्रफल पर एकमत नहीं हैं, इसलिए स्थापत्य को किसी असिद्ध निश्चित संख्या के बजाय उसके प्रमाणित घटकों से समझाना अधिक उचित है।

ऐतिहासिक / धार्मिक महत्व
