معرفی

مسجد بزرگ کوفه از کهن‌ترین مسجدهای جامع عراق و جهان اسلام است. این مسجد در مرکز کوفه قرار دارد و همراه آرامگاه‌های مسلم بن عقیل، هانی بن عروه، مختار ثقفی و چندین مقام مقدس، مجموعه‌ای پیوسته از حافظه دینی و تاریخی می‌سازد.

شهر کوفه حدود سال هفده هجری در دوره خلافت عمر بن خطاب و زیر نظر سعد بن ابی‌وقاص به عنوان شهر نظامی و مرکز شهری بنیاد شد. مسجد نقطه اصلی نقشه شهر تازه بود. شکل نخستین آن فضای باز نماز با مرزهای ساده و گنجایش کافی برای گرد آمدن سپاهیان و ساکنان بود.

گزارش‌های تاریخی از استفاده دوباره مصالح معماری شهر حیره سخن می‌گویند. در دوره اموی، زیاد بن ابیه مسجد را با آجر پخته، ستون‌های بلند و سقفی گسترده بازسازی کرد. دروازه‌ها، دیوارها، مناره‌ها، محراب‌ها، گنبدها و آرایش صحن در قرن‌های بعد بارها تغییر یافت.

در سال سی و شش هجری، امام علی بن ابی‌طالب، درود خدا بر او، کوفه را پایتخت خلافت خود قرار داد. مسجد تنها محل نماز نبود، بلکه مرکز حکومت، قضاوت، آموزش، بیت‌المال، رسیدگی به درخواست‌ها، مشورت و خطبه جمعه شد. بسیاری از خطبه‌های گردآمده در نهج‌البلاغه و خاطره‌های حکومت او با این مسجد پیوند دارند.

درون مسجد، محراب منسوب به امام علی، درود خدا بر او، دکةالقضاء، بیت‌الطشت و چند مقام قرار دارد که در سنت عبادی به پیامبران، فرشتگان و امامان نسبت داده شده‌اند. نقشه زیارتی کنونی مکان‌هایی را به حضرت آدم، نوح، ابراهیم، خضر، جبرئیل، پیامبر اسلام، امام زین‌العابدین و امام جعفر صادق، درود خدا بر آنان، پیوند می‌دهد. اینها نسبت‌های زیارتی و مکان‌های یادمانی وابسته به مسجدند و بدون دلیل جداگانه نباید قبر یا حضور اثبات‌شده باستان‌شناختی معرفی شوند.

دردناک‌ترین خاطره مسجد به رمضان سال چهل هجری تعلق دارد. سنت تاریخی و زیارتی، زخمی شدن مرگبار امام علی، درود خدا بر او، را هنگام نماز صبح نوزدهم رمضان در همین مسجد قرار می‌دهد؛ زمانی که عبدالرحمن بن ملجم با شمشیری زهرآلود بر او ضربه زد. امام را به خانه بردند و در بیست‌ویکم رمضان درگذشت. محراب کنونی مکان مرکزی یاد عبادت، عدالت و شهادت است، اما شکل معماری متأخر آن نباید با ساختمانی دست‌نخورده از قرن نخست یکی دانسته شود.

مأموریت مسلم بن عقیل و بحران سیاسی سال شصت هجری نیز در پیرامون مسجد جریان یافت. عبیدالله بن زیاد از مسجد و کاخ حکومتی برای ترساندن مردم استفاده کرد، یاران مسلم پراکنده شدند و مسلم و هانی بعداً کشته شدند. آرامگاه‌های آنان امروز بخشی از مجموعه زیارتی مسجد است.

مسجد با انقلاب عباسی نیز پیوند دارد. در سال صد و سی و دو هجری، خلافت نخستین خلیفه عباسی، ابوالعباس سفاح، در کوفه اعلام شد. بنابراین همین ساختمان دگرگونی‌های مهم دوره راشدین، امویان و عباسیان را به خود دیده است.

محدوده کنونی مجموعه‌ای بزرگ و چندبار بازسازی‌شده است، نه یک ساختمان دست‌نخورده از دوره نخست. برج‌های نیم‌دایره بیرونی، دروازه‌های بزرگ، رواق‌ها، ایوان‌ها و فضاهای نماز صحن را دربر گرفته‌اند. باب کنده، باب السده، باب الثعبان، باب الرحمه و باب الحجه هویت‌های تاریخی و زیارتی متمایز دارند. گزارش‌های منتشرشده درباره مساحت دقیق یکسان نیستند، پس بهتر است معماری با عناصر اثبات‌شده توصیف شود، نه با یک عدد دقیقِ بدون پشتوانه.

مرمت و تزیین در دوره‌های صفوی، عثمانی و عراق معاصر انجام شد. طرح‌های بزرگ سده بیستم و بیست‌ویکم کف، سنگ مرمر، کاشی‌کاری، خوشنویسی، محراب‌ها، دروازه‌ها، گنبدها و امکانات زائران را نوسازی کردند. پروژه‌های جدید باستان‌شناسی رابطه کالبدی مسجد، دارالاماره و رحبه را دوباره بررسی کرده‌اند. جایگاهی نزدیک، در میان مردم خانه امام علی، درود خدا بر او، نامیده می‌شود؛ این یک شناسایی زیارتی محلی است و باستان‌شناسیِ مجموعه شهری به‌تنهایی آن نسبت دقیق خانوادگی را اثبات نمی‌کند.

امروز مسجد همچنان در آموزش قرآن، راهنمایی فقهی، همایش‌های علمی، اعتکاف، گردهمایی‌های دینی، مراسم سوگواری، نگهداری کتاب و نسخه خطی و خدمت به زائران فعال است. در موسم اربعین، میلیون‌ها زائر پیش از حرکت به سوی کربلا از مسجد می‌گذرند. در سال‌های اخیر سامانه‌های تصویری هوشمند نیز برای شمارش دقیق‌تر، نظارت بر رفت‌وآمد و امنیت فعال شده‌اند.

مسجد بزرگ کوفه به زائر امکان می‌دهد در یک مکان با پیدایش شهری اسلامی، حکومت دادگرانه امام علی، شهادت یاران اهل بیت، معماری نخستین، عبادت و خدمت دینی زنده روبه‌رو شود. این مسجد تنها بنایی تاریخی نیست، بلکه بیان مرکزی روح جمعی کوفه است.

اهمیت تاریخی / دینی

مسجد بزرگ کوفه از بناهای بنیادین شهرسازی نخستین اسلامی است. مسجد، دارالاماره و رحبه مجاور، هسته‌ای دینی و شهری پدید آوردند که دگرگونی‌های آن با متن و باستان‌شناسی بازسازی می‌شود؛ با این حال باستان‌شناسی همه نام‌گذاری‌های زیارتی متأخرِ بناهای نزدیک را ثابت نمی‌کند.
