آرامگاه شناختهشده مختار بن ابیعبید ثقفی در محوطه زیارتگاههای مسجد جامع کوفه و در نزدیکی آرامگاههای مسلم بن عقیل علیه السلام و هانی بن عروه رحمة الله علیه قرار دارد. این صفحه رکورد اصلی زندگی، جنبش و محل دفن اوست. وجود قبر در مسجد کوفه به معنای پایان یافتن اختلافهای شدید تاریخی درباره شخصیت مختار نیست.
مختار از قبیله ثقیف و فرزند ابوعبید بن مسعود بود؛ پدرش در نبرد جسر کشته شد. او در فضای سیاسی کوفه رشد کرد، جایی که پس از واقعه کربلا، اندوه، پشیمانی، رقابت قبیلهای، قدرت اموی، حکومت زبیریان و انتظار هواداران اهل بیت علیهم السلام با یکدیگر برخورد داشتند.
نام مختار بیش از همه با قیامی پیوند دارد که در سال شصتوشش هجری در کوفه قدرت گرفت و شعار خونخواهی امام حسین علیه السلام را مطرح کرد. او حرکت خود را به محمد بن حنفیه نسبت میداد و نیروهایش علیه شماری از افراد دخیل در کربلا اقدام کردند. سپاه ابراهیم بن مالک اشتر نیز عبیدالله بن زیاد را در نبرد خازر شکست داد و کشت.
جنبش مختار تنها انتقام سیاسی نبود. مشارکت موالی و گروههای غیرعرب در حکومت و سپاه او، برتری سنتی اشراف قبایل عرب کوفه را به چالش کشید. به همین سبب برخی پژوهشگران جدید، جنبش او را مرحلهای مهم در دگرگونی اجتماعی عراق میدانند، در حالی که مخالفان معاصر او آن را تهدیدی علیه قدرت قبیلهای و سیاسی خود میدیدند.
منابع درباره ارتباط مختار با اهل بیت علیهم السلام یک نظر واحد ندارند. برخی روایات شیعی از ارسال سر قاتلان کربلا و پایان یافتن دوره سوگ خاندان هاشمی یاد میکنند و اقدام او را مثبت میبینند. روایات دیگری در همان سنت، ادعاها و روشهای سیاسی او را نکوهش میکنند. بنابراین نه تبدیل او به قهرمانی بینقص درست است و نه حذف نقش واقعی او در مجازات عاملان کربلا.
در منابع حدیثی اهل سنت، روایت کذاب و مبیر از قبیله ثقیف در صحیح مسلم و جامع ترمذی نقل شده و بسیاری از عالمان بعدی کذاب را بر مختار و مبیر را بر حجاج تطبیق کردهاند. متن صحیح مسلم خود نام مختار را در جمله نخست نمیآورد؛ تطبیق نام او بخشی از شرح و داوری عالمان بعدی است.
گزارشهایی نیز مختار را به ادعای خبر غیبی، الهام ویژه یا سخنانی شبیه وحی متهم میکنند. تفسیر ابن کثیر گزارشی از چنین ادعایی و پاسخ ابن عمر یا ابن عباس را نقل میکند. بیان مسئولانه باید روشن سازد که اینها گزارش، اتهام و تفسیر عالمانهاند و مورخان درباره ادعای صریح پیامبری از سوی مختار اتفاق نظر ندارند.
مختار با استفاده از نام محمد بن حنفیه پشتیبانی دینی و عاطفی به دست آورد، اما همین پیوند سرچشمه اختلاف شد. هواداران آن را نمایندگی خونخواهی علوی میدانستند و مخالفان بهرهبرداری سیاسی از نام مقدس. این دوگانه، فهم شخصیت او را دشوار و در عین حال برای تاریخ اندیشه سیاسی شیعه و شکلگیری کیسانیه مهم میکند.
در سال شصتوهفت هجری، مصعب بن زبیر با نیروهای بصره کوفه را محاصره کرد. مختار پس از تضعیف یارانش در نبرد کشته شد و شمار زیادی از پیروان او نیز پس از آن جان باختند. منابع به سبب جنگ سیاسی و اختلاف شدید، در تعبیر و داوری درباره مرگ او متفاوتاند.
آرامگاه مسجد کوفه، زائر و پژوهشگر را با همه این زمینه روبهرو میکند: خونخواهی کربلا، پشیمانی کوفه، برآمدن موالی، رقابت زبیری و اموی، زبان دینی در سیاست و اختلاف در ارزیابی یک رهبر. مهمترین درس مکان، جدا کردن احساس دینی، ادعای سیاسی، گزارش حدیثی و نقد تاریخی از یکدیگر است.
حضور آرامگاه در کنار دیگر یادمانهای مسجد کوفه، مختار را در همان جغرافیایی قرار میدهد که بسیاری از رخدادهای منتهی به کربلا و پیامدهای آن در آن شکل گرفت. زائر میتواند میان مرقد مسلم بن عقیل، هانی بن عروه و مختار، سه مرحله متفاوت را ببیند: دعوت و نمایندگی، وفاداری و پناه دادن، و سپس تلاش برای مجازات عاملان جنایت. این همجواری معنای تاریخی مجموعه را تقویت میکند، هرچند درباره روش و ادعاهای مختار همچنان باید با منابع گوناگون داوری کرد.
