सईद इब्न अब्दुल्लाह अल-हनफ़ी रज़ियल्लाहु अन्हु कूफ़ा के सक्रिय समर्थकों में थे जिनकी भूमिका आशूरा के युद्ध तक सीमित नहीं थी। प्रारंभिक ऐतिहासिक परंपरा उन्हें पत्रवाहक, हुसैनी आंदोलन की संपर्क-कड़ी, आशूरा की रात वफ़ादारी की घोषणा करने वाले और नमाज़ के समय इमाम हुसैन अलैहिस्सलाम की रक्षा में शहीद होने वाले साथी के रूप में सुरक्षित रखती है। जब कूफ़ा से इमाम हुसैन अलैहिस्सलाम के लिए पत्र और प्रतिनिधि भेजे गए, सईद और हानी इब्न हानी अंतिम प्रमुख संदेशवाहकों में थे। वे कूफ़ावासियों की बुलाहट और बैअत के दावे इमाम तक ले गए। इमाम हुसैन ने उनके माध्यम से अपना उत्तर भेजा जिसमें मुस्लिम इब्न अक़ील रज़ियल्लाहु अन्हु को प्रतिनिधि बनाकर भेजने की घोषणा थी। बाद में जब मुस्लिम इब्न अक़ील ने कूफ़ा में प्रारंभिक बैअत की सफलता की सूचना वाला पत्र इमाम हुसैन अलैहिस्सलाम को भेजा, कई मान्य वृत्तांत सईद को उसका वाहक बताते हैं। इस प्रकार वह मक्का, कूफ़ा और हुसैनी क़ाफ़िले के बीच महत्वपूर्ण राजनीतिक और नैतिक कड़ी बने। जब कूफ़ा की स्थिति बदल गई, उबैदुल्लाह इब्न ज़ियाद ने नियंत्रण स्थापित किया और मुस्लिम इब्न अक़ील रज़ियल्लाहु अन्हु शहीद हुए, तब भी सईद इमाम हुसैन के साथ रहे। स्रोत उनकी वापसी और यात्रा के हर चरण को सुरक्षित नहीं रखते, लेकिन करबला में उनकी उपस्थिति और वफ़ादारी मज़बूती से सिद्ध है। आशूरा की पूर्व संध्या पर जब इमाम हुसैन अलैहिस्सलाम ने साथियों को जाने की अनुमति दी, सईद ने बिना शर्त वफ़ादारी घोषित की। अबू मिख़नफ़ से प्रसारित रिपोर्ट में उन्होंने कहा कि यदि उन्हें मारा जाए, फिर जीवित किया जाए, जलाया जाए और वही यातना बार-बार दोहराई जाए, तब भी वह इमाम को नहीं छोड़ेंगे। कुछ रूपों में सत्तर बार या उसके निकट संख्या आती है, लेकिन मूल अर्थ पूर्ण समर्पण है। आशूरा की दोपहर जब नमाज़ का समय आया, इमाम हुसैन अलैहिस्सलाम ने शत्रु के तीरों के बीच नमाज़ पढ़ी। सईद इमाम के सामने खड़े होकर अपने शरीर को ढाल बना गए। प्रारंभिक वृत्तांत इस रक्षा और नमाज़ के बाद उनके गिरने को सुरक्षित रखता है। बाद की धार्मिक और मक़तल परंपरा तीरों की निश्चित संख्या, अंतिम प्रश्न कि क्या उन्होंने अपना कर्तव्य पूरा किया और इमाम का जन्नत का उत्तर बताती है। ये बातें उनकी स्मृति में अत्यंत प्रसिद्ध हैं, लेकिन पूरा शब्दांकन और संख्याएँ संक्षिप्त प्रारंभिक रिपोर्ट में समान रूप से सुरक्षित नहीं हैं और निश्चित पाठ के रूप में प्रस्तुत नहीं की जातीं। प्रारंभिक वृत्तांत किसी एक स्पष्ट हत्यारे का नाम नहीं देता, क्योंकि सईद एकल युद्ध में नहीं बल्कि सामूहिक तीर-वर्षा में घायल हुए। उनकी शहादत की मूल छवि इमाम की नमाज़, जमाअत और धार्मिक नेतृत्व की रक्षा के लिए अपने शरीर का बलिदान है। यह प्रोफ़ाइल करबला के शहीदों के साझा स्थान से जुड़ी है और सईद की अलग क़ब्र या स्वतंत्र मज़ार सिद्ध नहीं करती। उनकी स्मृति बुलावे का पत्र पहुँचाने, उत्तर ले जाने, कूफ़ा के राजनीतिक पतन के बाद डटे रहने, आशूरा की रात वचन देने और नमाज़ के सामने जीवन देने की निरंतर कथा है।
