Ansar al-Husayn, p. 82, preserves the forms Hajjaj ibn Zayd, Hajjaj ibn Badr and Hajjaj ibn Yazid, associates him with Banu Sa'd of Tamim in Basra and identifies the courier's sender as Mas'ud ibn Amr al-Azdi. Ibsar al-Ayn, pp. 212–214, and the later Imam Husayn Shrine article instead connect him with Yazid ibn Mas'ud al-Nahshali and preserve a later martyrdom account. The unsupported Zayd ibn Jabala parentage was removed from all five languages. The principal early narratives do not settle the sender, meeting place, journey sequence, battle order, killer, age or family.
