The Abu Mikhnaf material preserved by al-Tabari explicitly names al-Hajjaj ibn Masruq as the caller to prayer at Dhu Husam. Ibsar al-Ayn, p. 151, supports his Ju'fi-Madhhiji lineage, later companionship tradition, continuing muezzin role and the later identification of him and Yazid ibn Mughfil as messengers to Ubayd Allah ibn al-Hurr. The earliest Qasr Bani Muqatil account leaves the messenger unnamed, so that role remains a later identification. Al-Irshad preserves Masrur as a textual variant. His killer, age, family, exact combat order, rajaz and casualty figures remain unverified. The shared-parent location does not establish a separate grave.
