वे बसरा के अब्द अल-क़ैस से संबंधित यज़ीद इब्न थुबैत के पुत्र और उबैदुल्लाह इब्न यज़ीद के भाई थे। पिता का नाम यज़ीद या ज़ैद तथा थुबैत या नुबैत मिलता है; पिता और भाई से संबंध उनकी पहचान का सबसे मजबूत आधार है।
