The early historical notice preserved through Abu Mikhnaf/al-Tabari uses the form Huwayy, mawla of Abu Dharr, and is brief. Ansar al-Husayn, pp. 79-80, documents the name forms and source sequence. The modern academic study shows that ethnicity, age, the extended service chronology, the permission dialogue, fragrance and other famous details belong to later or unevenly transmitted memory.
