Abdullah ibn Ali, Peace Be Upon Him
🌿 Lineage and family background
Abdullah was a son of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib, Peace Be Upon Him. His mother was Lady Fatima bint Hizam al-Kilabiyya, known as Umm al-Banin, Peace Be Upon Her. He was a full brother of al-Abbas, Ja’far, and Uthman ibn Ali and a paternal brother of Imam Husayn.
⚔️ Role in the Karbala movement
A paternal brother of Imam Husayn, son of Umm al-Banin, and full brother of al-Abbas who remained with the Ahl al-Bayt on Ashura and was killed on the battlefield of Karbala.
Abdullah ibn Ali, Peace Be Upon Him, was a son of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib and Lady Fatima bint Hizam al-Kilabiyya, known as Umm al-Banin, Peace Be Upon Her. He was a paternal brother of Imam Husayn and a full brother of al-Abbas, Ja’far, and Uthman ibn Ali. He was killed with the Ahl al-Bayt on Ashura at Karbala. His maternal family belonged to Banu Kilab. Abu al-Faraj al-Isfahani preserves the Kilabi genealogy of Umm al-Banin in Maqatil al-Talibiyyin. The value of this lineage in the Karbala account is not a claim of inherited virtue by blood alone, but the historical context of a family whose four sons stood with Imam Husayn. Maqatil al-Talibiyyin reports that Abdullah was twenty-five years old when killed and that he left no descendants. These details are useful but come from a later genealogical and martyrdom compilation rather than from every early narrative, so they are presented as reported information rather than as universally attested facts. The early safe-conduct episode needs careful wording. The surviving Abu Mikhnaf report describes an offer made through the tribal kinship of Umm al-Banin and explicitly names al-Abbas, Ja’far, and Uthman in the exchange. Abdullah is not clearly named in that wording. The episode still expresses the collective stance of the brothers, but no direct quotation or individual action is assigned to Abdullah without evidence. A report preserved in Maqatil al-Talibiyyin says that al-Abbas asked Abdullah to advance before him because Abdullah had no children, and that Hani ibn Thubayt al-Hadrami then killed him. This gives a specific sequence for his martyrdom, but it belongs to one transmitted account and should not be treated as the only possible reconstruction of the battle. Al-Tabari and al-Irshad include Abdullah among the sons of Imam Ali who were killed with Imam Husayn. The broader sources securely preserve his family identity, presence at Karbala, and martyrdom on Ashura, while individual combat wording, order, and the exact circumstances of the final blow remain less uniform. His historical meaning lies in remaining with Imam Husayn when family survival and tribal protection could not be separated from the moral cause of Karbala. The sons of Umm al-Banin are remembered together because their sacrifice embodied family solidarity, loyalty to the Imam, and refusal to seek safety at the expense of the besieged household. This profile uses the shared Karbala parent location. The sources do not establish a separately identifiable grave for Abdullah ibn Ali, so the database places him within the collective burial and devotional memory of the Ahl al-Bayt martyrs rather than creating an artificial duplicate shrine or map marker.
🏛️ Historical importance
Abdullah ibn Ali is historically important as one of the four sons of Umm al-Banin who were killed with Imam Husayn. His identity is securely preserved in the family and martyr lists, while his detailed age, battle order, and killer depend on more specific transmitted reports. The safe-conduct tradition demonstrates the pressure placed on the brothers through tribal kinship, but the surviving early wording does not clearly name Abdullah in the exchange. Preserving that limitation prevents a collective family memory from being turned into an unsupported individual quotation. The shared Karbala location is historically responsible because it honors his established martyrdom without claiming a separate grave. Abdullah’s memory represents family solidarity, loyalty under siege, and the refusal to separate personal survival from responsibility toward Imam Husayn.

Maqatil al-Talibiyyin supports Abdullah’s parentage, reported age of twenty-five, no-progeny statement, the report that al-Abbas asked him to advance, and Hani ibn Thubayt as killer. Al-Tabari and al-Irshad support his identity among the sons of Imam Ali killed with Imam Husayn. The surviving Abu Mikhnaf safe-conduct wording explicitly names al-Abbas, Ja’far, and Uthman, not Abdullah, so no direct quotation or individual participation in that exchange is assigned to him. The Maqatil page note was changed to an independently verified online entry with pagination varying by edition. Identity and principal martyrdom claims remain core and Level A.

📜How did these reports reach us? — Open the short explanation
This atlas does not accept or reject a report solely because of an author’s school affiliation. Abu Mikhnaf was an early Kufan collector whose material was also preserved by broad Muslim historians such as al-Tabari; Shaykh al-Mufid was an Imami scholar who used earlier historical material in al-Irshad. Each claim is presented after considering chronological proximity, transmission, shared-source dependence, and comparison with other works.
