Sa'd, Mawla of Amr ibn Khalid

Source status: Strongly represented in core sources

🌿 Lineage and family background

Mawla and companion of Amr ibn Khalid al-Saydawi, May Allah Be Pleased With Him. Later tradition also calls him Sa'd ibn Abdullah, while some ziyara transmissions read Sa'id, mawla of Amr.

⚔️ Role in the Karbala movement

Mawla and loyal companion of Amr ibn Khalid who left Kufa with him, joined Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, and was martyred on Ashura with three companions.

Sa'd, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, is identified in the early narrative as the mawla and loyal companion of Amr ibn Khalid al-Saydawi, May Allah Be Pleased With Him. Later biographical tradition calls him Sa'd ibn Abdullah, while some ziyara transmissions read Sa'id. Despite these name forms, his relationship with Amr, journey, and martyrdom identify one coherent historical figure. The term mawla describes his social relationship, but the early event does not present him as a merely dependent character. Sa'd participated with personal intention and moral responsibility in every stage: leaving Kufa, taking a dangerous route, reaching Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, and remaining steadfast in battle. After the movement of Muslim ibn Aqil, Peace Be Upon Him, was suppressed and Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad's surveillance tightened, Sa'd left Kufa with Amr ibn Khalid, Mujamma ibn Abdullah al-A'idhi, and a Salmani companion, May Allah Be Pleased With Them. Al-Tirimmah ibn Adi guided them by an indirect route, and the party also brought the horse of Nafi ibn Hilal, May Allah Be Pleased With Him. They reached Imam Husayn's caravan near Udhayb al-Hijanat. Al-Hurr ibn Yazid's detachment tried to stop or return them, but Imam Husayn declared them his supporters and companions and announced that he would defend them. Sa'd's entry into the Husayni caravan is thus preserved as a clear choice made with full acceptance of danger. On Ashura, Sa'd attacked with Amr ibn Khalid, Jabir ibn al-Harith al-Salmani, and Mujamma, May Allah Be Pleased With Them. The four advanced into the enemy lines, were surrounded, and were cut off from the Imam's formation. Their joint action demonstrates mutual trust, practical coordination, and companionship maintained to the final stage. Al-Abbas ibn Ali, Peace Be Upon Him, advanced, broke the encirclement, and brought the four out. Although wounded, they took up their swords together when the enemy approached again and were martyred at the same place or in the same continuous phase of battle. Sa'd's story is preserved in this strong collective sequence: departure from Kufa, the Imam's protection, joint combat, al-Abbas's intervention, and collective martyrdom. This profile is linked to the collective location of the Karbala martyrs. Sa'd's life is an example of full human dignity and free moral agency within a social relationship of service or wala, expressed through loyalty that endured from the journey to martyrdom.

🏛️ Historical importance

Sa'd's historical importance lies in the collective journey that left Kufa despite official surveillance and reached Imam Husayn. His decision was an act of practical courage and clear moral choice. The report of encirclement, al-Abbas's intervention, the wounded return, and renewed joint combat preserves the companions' mutual trust and steadfastness. His biography explains a relationship of service or wala through full human dignity and free moral responsibility, while the collective location of the Karbala martyrs preserves his memory in its communal setting.

The early Abu Mikhnaf report identifies Sa'd as the mawla of Amr ibn Khalid and places him in the arrival at Udhayb al-Hijanat and the four-man combat, al-Abbas's intervention, and joint martyrdom. The English title 'attendant' was replaced by the historically broader term mawla, which may indicate clientage, manumission, or alliance and does not diminish Sa'd's independent moral agency. Later sources give Sa'd ibn Abdullah, while ziyara transmissions also read Sa'id, mawla of Amr; the Sa'id form was aligned across all five alternative-name fields. These are graded as variants of one coherent companion, not separate biographies. The Tabari battle-page note was corrected from 445 to 446.
