Mujamma ibn Abdullah al-A'idhi

Source status: Strongly represented in core sources

🌿 Lineage and family background

A Kufan figure attributed to A'idh Allah ibn Sa'd al-Ashira, a branch of Madhhij. Genealogical works preserve the line as Mujamma ibn Abdullah ibn Mujamma or a closely related form. Later biographies count his father Abdullah among the Companions and Mujamma among the supporters of Imam Ali, Peace Be Upon Him, who attended Siffin; these details are not equally early. A'idh ibn Mujamma, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, was his son.

⚔️ Role in the Karbala movement

An A'idhi supporter who conveyed an eyewitness assessment of Kufa's political condition to Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, joined the caravan through a dangerous route, and was martyred with his companions on Ashura.

Mujamma ibn Abdullah al-A'idhi, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, was a Kufan supporter from A'idh Allah ibn Sa'd al-Ashira, a branch of Madhhij. Historical lists write his affiliation as al-A'idhi and sometimes al-A'idi, while the middle elements of his genealogy also vary slightly among manuscripts. Later biographies count his father Abdullah among the Companions of the Prophet, Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him, and identify Mujamma as a supporter of Imam Ali, Peace Be Upon Him, who attended Siffin. These family and earlier military details are not preserved with equal clarity in the earliest Karbala narrative and are therefore presented as later biographical attribution. A'idh ibn Mujamma, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, was his son. Later martyr lists count both father and son among the martyrs of Karbala, but the detailed early narrative preserves Mujamma's conversation and the joint combat of four companions more clearly, while A'idh's individual activity remains limited. Mujamma belonged to a group that escaped Kufa with Amr ibn Khalid al-Saydawi, Sa'd the mawla of Amr, and a Salmani companion, May Allah Be Pleased With Them. Al-Tirimmah ibn Adi guided them, and they reached Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, near Udhayb al-Hijanat. Some later reports also associate Nafi ibn Hilal or A'idh ibn Mujamma with the journey, so the complete membership of the travelling group contains limited variation. The detachment of al-Hurr ibn Yazid attempted to prevent them from joining or to return them to Kufa. Imam Husayn declared them to be his companions and refused to surrender them. The episode shows the Imam extending moral and practical protection to supporters who had accepted danger in order to reach him. When Imam Husayn asked about conditions in Kufa, Mujamma gave a highly significant assessment. He stated that the notables had been won over by bribes and gifts, while the hearts of the ordinary people inclined toward the Imam even though their swords might be drawn against him the next day. The report is important early evidence of the contradiction among affection, fear, interest, and political coercion in Kufa. On Ashura, Mujamma and three companions entered the enemy ranks together. When they were cut off from the Husayni camp, al-Abbas ibn Ali, Peace Be Upon Him, came to their aid and broke the encirclement. They were wounded, but regrouped and continued fighting together. The concise early report states that all four were martyred in the same place or closely connected phase. Mujamma's individual killer, rajaz, age, and number of enemy casualties are not preserved with certainty. Later works place him among the martyrs of the first general assault, but the exact battlefield sequence is not universally agreed. This profile inherits the collective Karbala martyrs location. It does not establish a separate grave, independent shrine, or distinct map marker. Mujamma's memory unites accurate political diagnosis, a dangerous journey, the Imam's protection, and collective loyalty despite wounds in one coherent historical example.

🏛️ Historical importance

Mujamma's historical importance is most visible in his assessment of Kufa. The report that hearts inclined toward the Imam while swords could be raised against him provides a profound early interpretation of public behavior under political coercion. His journey is also important: he escaped surveillance, faced al-Hurr's detachment, and entered the protection of Imam Husayn. On Ashura, the joint attack, encirclement, rescue by al-Abbas, and renewed combat despite wounds gave practical form to his companionship. The shared Karbala location preserves his memory among the collective martyrs without asserting a separate grave. His profile shows that historical importance lies not only in casualty numbers but also in political insight, conscious travel, and final collective loyalty.

Al-Tabari's Abu Mikhnaf material strongly preserves Mujamma's arrival near Udhayb al-Hijanat, Imam Husayn's protection of the group, Mujamma's assessment of Kufa, and the joint combat in which al-Abbas broke the encirclement before the four companions were martyred. Tasmiyat independently preserves Mujamma and his son A'idh in the martyr list. Later genealogical sources add the extended lineage, his father's Companion status, Siffin participation and first-assault placement; those points remain clearly attributed to later biography. No individual killer, exact casualty count or separate grave is asserted.

This atlas does not accept or reject a report solely because of an author’s school affiliation. Abu Mikhnaf was an early Kufan collector whose material was also preserved by broad Muslim historians such as al-Tabari; Shaykh al-Mufid was an Imami scholar who used earlier historical material in al-Irshad. Each claim is presented after considering chronological proximity, transmission, shared-source dependence, and comparison with other works.
