Hani ibn Urwa

Source status: Strongly represented in core sources

🌿 Lineage and family background

He belonged to the influential Banu Murad branch of Madhhij. His father was Urwa al-Muradi. The early historical narrative does not preserve a complete account of his mother, spouse, or all children; later genealogical works mention Yahya and other descendants.

⚔️ Role in the Karbala movement

A senior Muradi leader of Kufa who sheltered Muslim ibn Aqil, Peace Be Upon Him, refused to surrender his guest and trust under governmental pressure, and was martyred in Kufa before Ashura.

Hani ibn Urwa, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, was a senior leader of Banu Murad and an influential tribal notable of Kufa. Banu Murad was a major branch of Madhhij, and Hani's house, opinion, and protection carried substantial weight in Kufan society. The sources do not preserve a complete account of his birth, early education, and household. The early Kufan narrative names Ruwayha daughter of Amr al-Zubaydi as his wife and Yahya as their son. Later biographies count Hani among men who lived in the time of the Prophet, Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him, and among the supporters of Imam Ali, Peace Be Upon Him, with reports of participation in the Camel and Siffin. The evidentiary level of these latter details is not uniform and requires caution. When Muslim ibn Aqil, Peace Be Upon Him, reached Kufa, he first stayed at the house of al-Mukhtar al-Thaqafi. As governmental surveillance increased, he moved to Hani's house. The house became an important center for pledges, communication, and meetings of Husayni supporters. Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad sent a man called Ma'qil into the inner circle while pretending to be a supporter bringing financial assistance. Through this espionage, the authorities learned of Muslim's residence and connections. Despite the danger, Hani did not immediately surrender his guest. Some historical reports describe a visit by Ibn Ziyad to Hani's house while Sharik ibn al-A'war was ill and a proposal that Muslim attack the governor there. The details vary, while the core ethical setting concerns the principles of hospitality, security, and the sanctity of Hani's house. Ibn Ziyad summoned Hani to the governor's palace under the appearance of concern and relationship. Evidence from the spy was presented, and Hani was ordered to surrender Muslim. He refused to betray his guest and the trust placed in his home. For this refusal, he was severely beaten and imprisoned. Members of Banu Murad gathered outside the palace, but the judge Shurayh was shown that Hani remained alive and was sent to speak to them, after which the gathering dispersed. Reports vary concerning Shurayh's role and the pressure placed upon him. After Muslim's movement had been dispersed, Ibn Ziyad ordered Hani taken toward the market or livestock area of Kufa. He called upon his tribe for assistance and was killed on governmental orders. The well-known chronology places his martyrdom with Muslim or on the same day, around 9 Dhu al-Hijja 60 AH. Hani's martyrdom is a pre-Karbala test of loyalty, hospitality, and trust. He placed his home, social standing, and life at risk to protect Muslim ibn Aqil and support the movement of Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him. This profile is linked to the recognized tomb of Hani ibn Urwa in the Great Mosque of Kufa complex, near the tomb of Muslim ibn Aqil. No duplicate grave or map marker is created at the collective Karbala location.

🏛️ Historical importance

Hani's historical importance lies in the fact that the Karbala movement in Kufa required not only letters but also a house, protection, and tribal support. Hani used his social standing to safeguard the trust represented by Muslim ibn Aqil, Peace Be Upon Him. His refusal before Ibn Ziyad to surrender Muslim is a major example of Islamic hospitality and political loyalty. He paid for that decision through physical abuse, imprisonment, and martyrdom. The gathering and dispersal of Banu Murad reveal the effects of tribal politics, information control, and governmental intimidation in Kufa. Hani's martyrdom was a decisive sacrifice in the moral field before the battlefield of Karbala. The link to his recognized tomb in the Great Mosque of Kufa complex preserves Hani's independent devotional identity and prevents a false duplicate grave or map marker at the collective Karbala location.

Al-Tabari's Kufan narrative and al-Irshad preserve Hani's Muradi standing, his protection of Muslim, Ma'qil's espionage, the summons to the palace, refusal to surrender his guest, beating, imprisonment, the gathering of Banu Murad and his execution. The same early narrative names Ruwayha daughter of Amr al-Zubaydi as his wife and Yahya as their son. The Sharik assassination proposal and reports that Hani met the Prophet or fought in Imam Ali's major battles are retained with caution because source detail and independence vary. The official Great Mosque of Kufa page supports the present recognized tomb. The protected linked_shrine_code IRQ-NJF-0117 was preserved and matches a recently QA-passed V28 shrine record.

📜How did these reports reach us? — Open the short explanation

This atlas does not accept or reject a report solely because of an author’s school affiliation. Abu Mikhnaf was an early Kufan collector whose material was also preserved by broad Muslim historians such as al-Tabari; Shaykh al-Mufid was an Imami scholar who used earlier historical material in al-Irshad. Each claim is presented after considering chronological proximity, transmission, shared-source dependence, and comparison with other works.
