Shawdhab, Mawla of Banu Shakir
🌿 Lineage and family background
He was affiliated with Banu Shakir, a branch of Hamdan. Early Arabic sources preserve the form Shawdhab mawla Shakir. The word mawla is context-dependent and can denote a client, affiliate, retainer, or ally; the title alone does not securely establish his exact legal or social status. Later biographical works interpret it as residence or affiliation among Banu Shakir and also call him Shawdhab ibn Abdullah al-Hamdani.
⚔️ Role in the Karbala movement
A respected Kufan supporter, close companion of Abis ibn Abi Shabib al-Shakiri, and martyr of Karbala; later biographical tradition also remembers him as a transmitter associated with the loyal circle of Imam Ali.
Shawdhab, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, was a respected and steadfast supporter from Kufa. His name is preserved in early lists of the martyrs, and he appears prominently in the Karbala narrative as a close companion of Abis ibn Abi Shabib al-Shakiri, May Allah Be Pleased With Him. The early Arabic form of his name is Shawdhab mawla Shakir. The word mawla is context-dependent and may denote a client, affiliate, retainer, or ally. The title alone does not securely determine the exact legal or social relationship, while later biographies interpret it as residence or affiliation among Banu Shakir. Banu Shakir was a recognized branch of Hamdan. Later biographical works also call him Shawdhab ibn Abdullah al-Hamdani, so that form is preserved as an alternative historical name. Some early sources describe him as prominent among the loyal supporters of Imam Ali, Peace Be Upon Him. In the first-century historical setting, this refers to loyalty to Imam Ali and association with his circle, not to a later denominational identity. Later biography also presents Shawdhab as a person who memorized and transmitted reports from Imam Ali. References to his teaching circle and standing in Kufa are preserved, although a complete account of his household, age, and family is not available. Later biographical reports say that he accompanied Abis ibn Abi Shabib al-Shakiri from Kufa to Mecca and remained with Imam Husayn until Karbala. The early battle narrative firmly preserves his companionship with Abis and presence at Karbala, although it does not document every stage of the journey. On Ashura, Abis asked Shawdhab what he intended to do. Shawdhab stated clearly that he would fight with his companion in defence of the grandson of the Messenger of Allah, Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him, until he gave his life. Abis affirmed the resolve he expected from Shawdhab and asked him to enter the field before him, so that he too might fulfil his responsibility before Imam Husayn like the other loyal companions. The exchange demonstrates mutual trust and loyalty until the final moment. Shawdhab entered the battle, fought, and was martyred. The stronger early narrative does not preserve a certain individual killer, casualty count, or detailed combat sequence, so his established identity rests on loyalty, companionship, and martyrdom at Karbala. This profile inherits the collective Karbala martyrs location. It does not assert a separate grave, independent shrine, or distinct map marker for Shawdhab.
🏛️ Historical importance
Shawdhab's historical importance lies in the union of scholarly, social, and practical loyalty. He was remembered as a transmitter associated with the loyal circle of Imam Ali and carried that commitment into final sacrifice at Karbala. The word mawla in the early name form is central to his identity, but it carries several possible social meanings. Preserving the title while noting possibilities such as client, affiliate, retainer, or ally is more cautious than assigning one exact legal status. His final exchange with Abis highlights the mutual trust of the companions at Karbala. Shawdhab declared his intention, entered the battlefield, and was martyred in support of Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him. The shared Karbala location preserves his memory with the other martyrs without asserting a separate grave. His profile presents first-century political and religious loyalty without imposing later sectarian terminology.

The early list preserves Shawdhab as the mawla of Shakir and places him among the Hamdani martyrs. The early battle narrative preserves his final exchange with Abis and his martyrdom. Mawla is retained as the historical title because the early wording does not by itself settle whether the relationship was that of client, affiliate, retainer, or ally. Later biographies interpret the title as affiliation or residence among Banu Shakir and preserve reports that he transmitted from Imam Ali and accompanied Abis from Kufa to Mecca. No separate grave is asserted.

📜How did these reports reach us? — Open the short explanation
This atlas does not accept or reject a report solely because of an author’s school affiliation. Abu Mikhnaf was an early Kufan collector whose material was also preserved by broad Muslim historians such as al-Tabari; Shaykh al-Mufid was an Imami scholar who used earlier historical material in al-Irshad. Each claim is presented after considering chronological proximity, transmission, shared-source dependence, and comparison with other works.
