Bashir ibn Amr al-Hadrami

Source status: Varies across source lists

🌿 Lineage and family background

The nisba al-Hadrami indicates a Hadrami connection, and later biographical works associate him with Kinda. The sources vary between Bishr and Bashir for his name and between Amr and Umar for his father's name; a complete genealogy is not preserved with certainty.

⚔️ Role in the Karbala movement

A steadfast supporter of Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, counted in al-Tabari's narrative among the last remaining companions. Later ziyarat tradition associates him with the refusal to leave after news of a captured son, while the early prose transmission names Muhammad ibn Bishr al-Hadrami.

The name of this martyr appears in several forms, including Bishr, Bashir, Amr, and Umar. The present row uses Bashir ibn Amr al-Hadrami, while Bishr ibn Amr al-Hadrami is retained as an important source variant. The nisba al-Hadrami points to a Hadrami background, and later biographical works associate him with the tribe of Kinda. The available sources do not preserve a complete genealogy or every detail of his family with certainty. The earliest accounts do not provide a detailed place and date for his joining the caravan of Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him. His presence and martyrdom at Karbala are nevertheless recognized in historical and ziyarat lists. In al-Tabari's narrative from Abu Mikhnaf, al-Dahhak ibn Abd Allah al-Mashriqi reports that after most of the companions of Imam Husayn had been killed, Suwayd ibn Amr and Bishr ibn Amr were among those who remained. This places him among the steadfast companions of the final stage of the battle. The famous loyalty report itself has an important attribution problem. The early prose transmission from Ibn Sa'd names Muhammad ibn Bishr al-Hadrami, whereas later ziyarat and biographical tradition associates the same refusal to leave with Bishr ibn Amr al-Hadrami. The episode is therefore presented as a disputed attribution rather than an unquestionably personal incident. In the report, news arrives that a son has been captured on the frontier of al-Ray, Imam Husayn permits an attempt to secure his release, and the person concerned refuses to leave the Imam. Some versions add another son who was present, garments for the ransom, and their stated value, but the differences in name and family detail prevent every element from being assigned with certainty to Bishr or Bashir ibn Amr. Separate from this disputed loyalty report, al-Tabari's battle narrative names Bishr ibn Amr with Suwayd ibn Amr among the last remaining companions. Later works differ over the sequence of his martyrdom, so the last-companions report is preserved without merging it into the captured-son account. This profile inherits the collective Karbala martyrs location. It does not establish a separate grave, an independent shrine, or a distinct map marker for Bishr or Bashir al-Hadrami, May Allah Be Pleased With Him.

🏛️ Historical importance

Ziyarat memory connects Bishr or Bashir al-Hadrami with a reply of loyalty in which family distress did not lead to abandonment of Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him. Because the early prose transmission names Muhammad ibn Bishr, historical integrity requires the personal attribution of that episode to remain explicitly disputed. Bishr ibn Amr's place among the last remaining companions in al-Tabari's battle narrative is the stronger historical identification. Variations in his name, his father's name, the son's identity and the attribution of the loyalty episode show why separate transmission strands must remain distinct. The shared-location arrangement connects his martyrdom to the collective memory of Karbala without establishing an unsupported separate grave or shrine.

Al-Tabari independently supports Bishr ibn Amr as one of the last remaining companions. The Ibn Sa'd prose report of the captured son names Muhammad ibn Bishr al-Hadrami, while later ziyarat and biographical tradition associates the refusal to leave with Bishr ibn Amr. The profile therefore keeps the martyr identity and the disputed loyalty-report attribution distinct.

📜How did these reports reach us? — Open the short explanation

This atlas does not accept or reject a report solely because of an author’s school affiliation. Abu Mikhnaf was an early Kufan collector whose material was also preserved by broad Muslim historians such as al-Tabari; Shaykh al-Mufid was an Imami scholar who used earlier historical material in al-Irshad. Each claim is presented after considering chronological proximity, transmission, shared-source dependence, and comparison with other works.
