Abu Thumama Amr ibn Abdullah al-Sa'idi

Source status: Strongly represented in core sources

🌿 Lineage and family background

He belonged to Banu Sa'id, a branch of Hamdan. His recognized name was Amr ibn Abdullah ibn Ka'b al-Sa'idi and his kunya was Abu Thumama. The affiliations al-Sa'idi and al-Saydawi both appear in the sources. A complete account of his mother, spouse, children, and birth date is not preserved.

⚔️ Role in the Karbala movement

An influential Kufan supporter of the Husayni cause, trusted financial and military organizer for Muslim ibn Aqil, protector of Imam Husayn, the companion who called attention to the noon prayer, and a martyr of Karbala.

Abu Thumama Amr ibn Abdullah al-Sa'idi, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, was counted among the respected and courageous men of Hamdan. He belonged to the steadfast Kufan supporters who did not limit their loyalty to words but demonstrated it through organization, protection, and complete commitment in action. Later rijal tradition also counts him among the companions of Imam Ali and Imam Hasan, Peace Be Upon Them. His Kufan standing, military ability, and long attachment to Ahl al-Bayt form a recognized part of his biography. The available sources do not preserve a complete account of his household or age. When Muslim ibn Aqil, Peace Be Upon Him, reached Kufa, Abu Thumama became one of his trusted assistants. Financial contributions offered by supporters were entrusted to him, and he used them to purchase weapons according to need. The historical narrative describes him as perceptive, skilled in this work, and one of the courageous horsemen of the Arabs. When the movement in Kufa was organized, he was also given responsibility for an important tribal division. This service shows that he was not only a fighter but a responsible leader who understood discipline, resources, and military preparation. Even after Muslim's movement was dispersed, he did not abandon Husayni loyalty. He escaped the tightening control in Kufa, reached Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, and remained with the caravan at Karbala. Every stage of his journey is not preserved, but his presence and trusted position in the Imam's camp are clear. At Karbala, Umar ibn Sa'd sent the dangerous Kathir ibn Abdullah to deliver a message to Imam Husayn. Abu Thumama recognized him and refused to allow him near the Imam while carrying his sword. The episode demonstrates vigilance in identifying danger and personal responsibility for the Imam's safety. During the severe fighting on Ashura, Abu Thumama noticed that the time of the noon prayer had arrived. He told Imam Husayn that the enemy had drawn near and that he wished to sacrifice himself before the Imam, but also desired to meet Allah after performing the prayer behind him. Imam Husayn accepted the reminder and prayed that Allah make him among those who establish prayer and remember Him. The Imam then led his companions in prayer amid the battle, while loyal supporters formed a protective line against the incoming arrows. After the prayer, Abu Thumama continued his duty and fought in defence of Imam Husayn. Later maqtal tradition preserves rajaz verses attributed to him expressing grief for Ahl al-Bayt and support for Imam Husayn. The sources do not preserve one uniform account of the individual killer or final blow, so the established element is his loyal combat and martyrdom at Karbala. This profile inherits the collective Karbala martyrs location. It does not assert a separate grave, independent shrine, or distinct map marker for Abu Thumama. His memory combines organizational service, protection of the Imam, commitment to prayer, and Husayni loyalty until the final moment.

🏛️ Historical importance

Abu Thumama's historical importance is visible in both the Kufan and Karbala stages. In Kufa he handled financial resources, weapons, and tribal organization, revealing the practical preparation behind the Husayni movement. His prevention of a dangerous messenger from approaching the Imam with a sword is a clear example of protective awareness. He treated the safety of Imam Husayn, the camp, and the gathering as a personal responsibility. His reminder of the noon prayer made his name a symbol of the relationship between worship and martyrdom. Prayer on the battlefield shows that the Husayni stand was centered on obedience to Allah, religious responsibility, and human dignity. Under the shared Karbala location, his memory remains with the collective martyrs without asserting a separate grave. His biography presents a companion who remained steadfast beside Imam Husayn as an organizer, protector, worshipper, and fighter.

The early narrative identifies Abu Thumama as the trusted organizer for Muslim ibn Aqil who received funds and purchased weapons, and as the guard who prevented the armed Kathir ibn Abdullah from approaching Imam Husayn. The noon-prayer reminder is widely preserved in Karbala literature and is retained as the central devotional episode. Later rajaz, exact age, claims of earlier service with Imam Ali and Imam Hasan, and a single named killer are not treated as equally secure. The shared-parent location does not assert a separate grave.
