Na'im ibn Ajlan al-Ansari

Source status: Strongly represented in core sources

🌿 Lineage and family background

The early list identifies him as an Ansari and preserves his father's name as Ajlan or al-Ajlan. Later biography describes him as Khazraji and Zuraqi and extends the genealogy as Na'im ibn al-Ajlan ibn al-Nu'man ibn Amir ibn Zurayq.

⚔️ Role in the Karbala movement

An Ansari supporter of Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, whose name is preserved among the martyrs of Karbala in an early list.

Na'im ibn Ajlan al-Ansari, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, is preserved in the early list of al-Fadil ibn al-Zubayr al-Kufi among the Ansari men killed at Karbala. This notice is the primary historical basis for including him among the supporters martyred with Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him. His father's name is preserved as Ajlan or al-Ajlan. The early list calls him an Ansari, while later biography supplies the more specific Khazraji and Zuraqi affiliation and the genealogy Na'im ibn al-Ajlan ibn al-Nu'man ibn Amir ibn Zurayq. Later biography identifies al-Nu'man and al-Nadr as his brothers. Ibsar al-Ayn describes the three as companions of Imam Ali, Peace Be Upon Him, men with a remembered presence at Siffin, and courageous poets. Separate political or administrative roles reported for his brothers are not transferred into Na'im's own biography. According to Ibsar al-Ayn, Na'im remained in Kufa after the deaths of al-Nu'man and al-Nadr. When Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, reached Iraq, Na'im went out to him and joined his company. Independently of that later biography, the early martyr list strongly preserves his Ansari identity and martyrdom. Later maqtal tradition places Na'im among those martyred in the first general assault on Ashura. Devotional and commemorative memory also preserves his name as a representative of Ansari loyalty. Na'im's memory joins the Ansar of Medina, Khazraji tradition, and Kufan Alid loyalty with support at Karbala. This profile inherits the collective Karbala martyrs location and combines his early roster identity, later family tradition, and established martyrdom in their proper source order.

🏛️ Historical importance

Na'im's Ansari affiliation connects the support of Karbala with the early communal memory of Medina. His inclusion in an early name-list is the strongest basis for his remembrance even though a full personal biography has not survived. His profile also demonstrates why later genealogical and battlefield details must be distinguished from the earliest evidence. The established name and martyrdom can be preserved while reports about brothers, companionship, Siffin, and the initial assault remain carefully qualified.

The early list explicitly includes Na'im ibn Ajlan among the Ansari martyrs, establishing the core identity and martyrdom. Ibsar al-Ayn, p. 158, supports the report of his brothers al-Nadr and al-Nu'man, their association with Imam Ali and Siffin, Na'im's continued residence in Kufa, his joining Imam Husayn and the first-assault tradition. Mustadrakat Ilm Rijal al-Hadith preserves the later extended Zarqi-Khazraji genealogy. Political or administrative roles reported for his brothers are not assigned to Na'im.

📜How did these reports reach us? — Open the short explanation

This atlas does not accept or reject a report solely because of an author’s school affiliation. Abu Mikhnaf was an early Kufan collector whose material was also preserved by broad Muslim historians such as al-Tabari; Shaykh al-Mufid was an Imami scholar who used earlier historical material in al-Irshad. Each claim is presented after considering chronological proximity, transmission, shared-source dependence, and comparison with other works.
