Abu al-Hutuf ibn al-Harith al-Ansari

Source status: Varies across source lists

🌿 Lineage and family background

The early name list identifies him as the brother of Sa'd ibn al-Harith and counts both men among the Ansar. Later biographical works add the nisba al-Ajlani and further genealogical details, but a complete lineage is not preserved uniformly across the early sources.

⚔️ Role in the Karbala movement

An Ansari who, according to an early martyr list, chose the support of Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, during the final stage of Ashura and was killed at Karbala.

Abu al-Hutuf ibn al-Harith al-Ansari is named with his brother Sa'd ibn al-Harith in the early list compiled by al-Fudayl ibn al-Zubayr al-Kufi among those killed with Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, at Karbala. This brief but early entry is the principal evidence for his historical identity. According to the same list, the two brothers were initially in the army of Umar ibn Sa'd and were associated with the Muhakkima. This description should be treated as the wording of the source; the available early report does not preserve a detailed account of their previous lives, learning, or the precise character of that affiliation. The early account states that they heard the voices of the women and children of the family of the Messenger of Allah, Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him, and then made a decisive change of position. They separated from the opposing force and chose to support Imam Husayn. The report says that the brothers fought with their swords until they were killed. It also states jointly that they struck down or injured three men from the army of Umar ibn Sa'd, but it does not assign an individual total to either brother. The available sources do not preserve with certainty his age, earlier political history, date of arrival at Karbala, individual speech, killer, or exact sequence of martyrdom. Later narrative detail is therefore not treated as equal to the early attestation. Later maqtal and devotional literature remembers their final choice as an example of moral awakening, return, and support for the truth. That meaning is consistent with the decision preserved in the early list, although every speech and combat detail found in later retellings is not early historical evidence. This profile inherits the collective Karbala martyrs location. It does not establish a separate grave, an independent shrine, or a distinct map marker for Abu al-Hutuf, May Allah Be Pleased With Him.

🏛️ Historical importance

Abu al-Hutuf is historically important for the decisive choice preserved with his brother Sa'd in an early name list. Leaving the opposing ranks and choosing the support of Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, represents conscious moral responsibility at the final stage of Karbala. His entry also teaches source discipline. An early list preserves the name, brotherhood, former position, and final action, but not a complete biography, killer, or individual combat record; those silences should not be filled with unsupported later detail. The shared-location relationship preserves his martyrdom within the collective memory of Karbala without creating a claim to a separate grave or shrine.

Tasmiyat names Abu al-Hutuf and his brother Sa'd ibn al-Harith among the Ansar, describes them as associated with the Muhakkima, and reports that after hearing the women and children of Ahl al-Bayt they changed sides, fought with swords and were killed after jointly striking three opponents. This is the only early independent attestation located; the later works cited for the profile largely depend on the same report. The single early witness is meaningful but does not justify converting the profile into multiply corroborated core evidence. Later al-Ajlani, Khazraji, personal-name and speech details remain cautious. Age, killer and separate individual combat totals are not established. The shared-parent location does not establish a separate grave.

This atlas does not accept or reject a report solely because of an author’s school affiliation. Abu Mikhnaf was an early Kufan collector whose material was also preserved by broad Muslim historians such as al-Tabari; Shaykh al-Mufid was an Imami scholar who used earlier historical material in al-Irshad. Each claim is presented after considering chronological proximity, transmission, shared-source dependence, and comparison with other works.
