Al-Harith ibn Nabhan

Source status: Strongly represented in core sources

🌿 Lineage and family background

The early Tasmiyat roster directly names al-Harith ibn Nabhan and describes him as a mawla of Hamza ibn Abd al-Muttalib. The patronymic makes Nabhan his father, while later biographies interpret Nabhan as Hamza's servant or dependent and expand al-Harith's long household association. The name and martyrdom are early; the fuller family biography is later.

⚔️ Role in the Karbala movement

A martyr directly named in the early Tasmiyat roster as a mawla of Hamza and counted among the supporters killed with Imam Husayn; his fuller biography comes from later works.

The early Tasmiyat roster directly names al-Harith ibn Nabhan among those killed with Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, at Karbala and describes him as a mawla of Hamza ibn Abd al-Muttalib, May Allah Be Pleased With Him. His basic identity is therefore not dependent only on later lists. The wording contains two distinct elements: ibn Nabhan identifies Nabhan as his father, while mawla of Hamza is the early roster's description of al-Harith. Later biographies explain this by describing Nabhan as Hamza's servant or dependent and al-Harith as his son. Those later works report that Nabhan was a courageous horseman who died not long after Hamza and that al-Harith subsequently remained connected with Imam Ali, Imam Hasan, and Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Them. This extended biography is plausible within the later tradition, but it is not contained in the same detail in the early martyr roster. Later accounts also say that al-Harith accompanied Imam Husayn from Medina through Makkah to Karbala and was killed in the first general assault. The core fact of martyrdom is supported by the roster, while the complete journey and exact battlefield sequence belong to later biographical reconstruction. No early detailed report securely preserves an individual speech, duel, killer, age, spouse, children, or separate grave for him. The profile therefore avoids adding dramatic scenes and keeps the distinction between the short early identification and the fuller later narrative visible. This profile inherits the collective location of the martyrs of Karbala and does not establish an individually identified grave, independent shrine or separate map marker for al-Harith ibn Nabhan. His historical place rests on his early preserved name, the designation mawla of Hamza, and martyrdom with Imam Husayn.

🏛️ Historical importance

Al-Harith is historically important because an early roster preserves his name and a patronage association linked with Hamza ibn Abd al-Muttalib. Even with limited biography, this places him within a remembered network connecting early Muslim households and Karbala. His profile also demonstrates why evidence levels must remain distinct. The early list provides a compact identity, while later biographies expand his father's story, lifelong service, journey, and first-assault martyrdom. The shared location preserves his memory among the collective martyrs without creating a false separate shrine. His entry honours a lesser-known supporter while openly retaining the limits of the record.

Al-Fudayl ibn al-Zubayr's early Tasmiyat roster directly names al-Harith ibn Nabhan and describes him as a mawla of Hamza ibn Abd al-Muttalib. This makes the main identity and martyrdom core rather than merely variant. The patronymic identifies Nabhan as his father. Later biographical works interpret Nabhan as Hamza's servant or dependent and expand the account to al-Harith's association with Imam Ali, Imam Hasan and Imam Husayn, the Medina-to-Karbala journey and martyrdom in the first assault. Those expanded details remain later evidence. The shared-parent location does not establish an individual grave.

This atlas does not accept or reject a report solely because of an author’s school affiliation. Abu Mikhnaf was an early Kufan collector whose material was also preserved by broad Muslim historians such as al-Tabari; Shaykh al-Mufid was an Imami scholar who used earlier historical material in al-Irshad. Each claim is presented after considering chronological proximity, transmission, shared-source dependence, and comparison with other works.
