Mas'ud ibn al-Hajjaj, May Allah Be Pleased With Him

Source status: Strongly represented in core sources

🌿 Lineage and family background

The early list explicitly identifies him as the father of Abd al-Rahman ibn Mas'ud. Later sources use Tamimi or Taymi affiliations, but the sub-tribal genealogy is not transmitted uniformly; the father-son relationship is the secure point.

⚔️ Role in the Karbala movement

A supporter of Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, and the father of Abd al-Rahman ibn Mas'ud; both are named among the martyrs in an early list.

Mas'ud ibn al-Hajjaj, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, is named by al-Fudayl ibn al-Zubayr al-Kufi together with his son, Abd al-Rahman ibn Mas'ud, May Allah Be Pleased With Him. This paired entry is the earliest and strongest named evidence for the martyrdom of both father and son at Karbala. Later biographical works call Mas'ud Tamimi or Taymi, but the sub-tribal form is not transmitted uniformly. The early list securely preserves his father as al-Hajjaj and identifies Abd al-Rahman as his son; a more detailed genealogy should remain cautious. Some later maqtal and biographical accounts state that Mas'ud and his son came from Kufa with the army of Umar ibn Sa'd and, during the period of truce or negotiation, found an opportunity to join Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him. This is a significant later narrative, but the early name-list does not preserve the journey or change of allegiance. When read within its later source category, the report presents their decision as a notable moral choice at Karbala. The exact day of their joining, the conversation that preceded it, and their earlier political position are not established with certainty in the available early record. The early list confirms Mas'ud's martyrdom but does not identify his killer or preserve a specific duel, final words, or secure battlefield sequence. Some later authors count him and his son among those killed in an initial assault, and that detail should remain classified as later maqtal tradition. Mas'ud, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, is remembered with his son as an example of shared loyalty and sacrifice. His profile inherits the collective Karbala martyrs location and does not claim a separate grave, shrine, or independent geographical marker.

🏛️ Historical importance

Mas'ud's historical importance begins with the early paired entry that preserves both father and son among the martyrs. This relationship gives the event a distinct human dimension in which members of one family are remembered for a shared moral commitment. The later account of leaving the opposing army and joining Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, is powerful but must remain distinct from the early named evidence. This separation preserves their memory without granting historical certainty to details that survive only in later literature.

Tasmiyat, p. 153 entry 61, securely names Mas'ud ibn al-Hajjaj and immediately identifies Abd al-Rahman as his son. This paired entry establishes core roster status and the father-son relationship, but it does not supply tribal detail, journey, killer or battle sequence. Ibsar al-Ayn preserves the later Taymi/Tamimi identification, the report that father and son came with Umar ibn Sa'd during the truce, joined Imam Husayn and were killed in the first assault. The Rafed retelling expands the method of joining; it is modern secondary narration and is not treated as independent early corroboration. No certain age, speech, killer or separate grave is asserted. The shared-parent location records collective Karbala association only.

📜How did these reports reach us? — Open the short explanation

This atlas does not accept or reject a report solely because of an author’s school affiliation. Abu Mikhnaf was an early Kufan collector whose material was also preserved by broad Muslim historians such as al-Tabari; Shaykh al-Mufid was an Imami scholar who used earlier historical material in al-Irshad. Each claim is presented after considering chronological proximity, transmission, shared-source dependence, and comparison with other works.
