Salim, Mawla of Amir ibn Muslim, May Allah Be Pleased With Him

Source status: Strongly represented in core sources

🌿 Lineage and family background

Salim was the mawla of Amir ibn Muslim al-Abdi. The mawla relationship does not establish blood descent; it may indicate a freedman, client, ally, dependent, or another social and tribal bond of wala. Reliable details about his parents, original tribe, age, marriage, and children are not preserved. He must be distinguished from Salim ibn Amr al-Kalbi and from Salim, the mawla of Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad.

⚔️ Role in the Karbala movement

A separately named Basran martyr identified in the early list as the mawla of Amir ibn Muslim, whom later biographical sources connect with Amir to the caravan of Yazid ibn Thubayt.

Salim, the mawla of Amir ibn Muslim, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, was among the Basran supporters who left despite severe governmental surveillance to aid Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him. An early martyr list preserves him as a separately named member of the Abd al-Qays Basran group and identifies him through his relationship to Amir ibn Muslim al-Abdi. The term mawla should not be treated as blood lineage. It may indicate a freedman, client, ally, dependent, or another social and tribal bond of wala. Reliable details about Salim's parents, original tribe, age, marriage, and children are not preserved, so the profile does not speculate about them. He must be distinguished from Salim ibn Amr al-Kalbi, because the two names appear close to one another in some martyr lists. He must also not be confused with Salim, the mawla of Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad, who belonged to the opposing governmental circle. The stable identity of Salim mawla Amir rests on his companionship with Amir and the Basran Husayni group. Al-Tabari’s early narrative describes the gathering at the house of Mariya bint Munqidh al-Abdiyya, surveillance in Basra, and Yazid ibn Thubayt’s departure with his two sons. Later biographical and maqtal sources connect Amir and his mawla Salim with the same journey. Because Amir and Salim are not explicitly named in that particular Tabari scene, their journey is identified as later tradition. Later sources place Salim with Amir in the Basran circle that also included Yazid’s sons Abdullah and Ubaydullah, Sayf ibn Malik, and Adham ibn Umayya. The early Tasmiyat list independently preserves all of these names among the Abd al-Qays martyrs, but it does not provide an equally early narrative of every stage of their shared journey. The strongest historical basis for Salim is his separately preserved name in the early list as Amir’s mawla and his martyrdom at Karbala. Later tradition supplies the account of traveling from Basra with Amir and joining the Husayni caravan. No particular journey service, fixed office, or independent battlefield duty is reliably preserved. The early list preserves his name among the Karbala martyrs. Later maqtal and devotional traditions count him among the martyrs of Ashura, sometimes placing him in the first general assault, but his individual killer, rajaz, age, wounds, and personal combat details are not securely known. This profile uses the shared location of the Karbala martyrs and does not claim a separate grave or independent shrine for Salim. His memory shows that support for Imam Husayn was not limited to tribal elites; people linked through wala and social companionship also consciously chose the journey and martyrdom.

🏛️ Historical importance

Salim's historical importance lies in showing the role of clientage and social companionship among the supporters of Karbala. Although linked to Amir ibn Muslim, he appears as a separately named and historically participating loyal companion. His separate identity, mawla relationship to Amir, and martyrdom at Karbala are strong in the early list. The journey from Basra with Amir and placement in the first assault come from later sources, while original lineage, age, killer, rajaz, and individual combat details are not preserved. The shared Karbala location preserves his memory with Amir and the other martyrs. His biography shows that support for Imam Husayn crossed social rank and that persons linked through wala also consciously participated with loyalty and sacrifice.

The early Tasmiyat list separately names Salim as the mawla of Amir ibn Muslim among the Abd al-Qays martyrs. Al-Tabari’s early Basran narrative securely concerns Yazid ibn Thubayt and his two sons; later biographical and maqtal works connect Amir and Salim with the same departure and joining near Makkah. The mawla relationship is not treated as blood descent. Salim is kept distinct from Salim ibn Amr al-Kalbi and from Salim, mawla of Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad. First-assault placement remains later attribution, and no certain parents, age, killer, rajaz, spouse, children, or separate grave is asserted.
