Abdullah ibn Aqil

Source status: Varies across source lists

🌿 Lineage and family background

Abdullah ibn Aqil, Peace Be Upon Him, is counted among the Aqilid branch of Banu Hashim and the sons of Aqil ibn Abi Talib. Genealogical works differ over whether Aqil had more than one son named Abdullah, their mothers, and the distinctions between them; this profile therefore retains only the broadly shared lineage.

⚔️ Role in the Karbala movement

A martyr of Banu Aqil named in several Karbala rosters, with variation concerning his precise identity and some event attributions.

Abdullah ibn Aqil, Peace Be Upon Him, is a martyr of the Aqilid branch of Banu Hashim whose name appears in several historical and genealogical rosters of the martyrs of Karbala. His basic identification as a son of Aqil ibn Abi Talib is the most widely retained element. Genealogical works do not offer one uniform account of Aqil's sons, the number of individuals named Abdullah, or the distinction between an elder and a younger Abdullah. Some sources mention Abdullah al-Akbar, others simply write Abdullah ibn Aqil, and some attributions may overlap with other Aqilid martyrs. Al-Fudayl ibn al-Zubayr's early list describes his mother only as an unnamed umm walad. The available sources do not securely preserve his age, marital life, children, or pre-Karbala biography, so uncited later stories have not been used to fill these gaps. Karbala narratives count him among the members of the house of Abu Talib who remained with Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, and were killed on Ashura. The order of his combat, the identity of his attacker, and the full circumstances of his death are not transmitted identically across the sources. Al-Fudayl ibn al-Zubayr's list names Amr ibn Subayh as his killer. By contrast, Abu al-Faraj al-Isfahani, citing al-Mada'ini, attributes the death of Abdullah al-Akbar ibn Aqil to Uthman ibn Khalid and a Hamdani man; al-Tabari's Abu Mikhnaf narrative assigns that same pair to Abd al-Rahman ibn Aqil. The conflict strongly suggests transmission or identification overlap and prevents a certain reconstruction of his death. This profile inherits the collective Karbala martyrs location and makes no claim for a separate grave or independent shrine. Ziyarat memory honors him among the martyrs of Banu Aqil and the house of Abu Talib, while his source status remains variant and his research level Under Review because of unresolved identification overlap.

🏛️ Historical importance

The importance of Abdullah ibn Aqil, Peace Be Upon Him, lies within the collective participation of Banu Aqil and the sacrifice of the house of Abu Talib. His name shows that Karbala rosters preserve the memory of a wider family group beyond the best-known figures. Variation in his identification demonstrates why early name lists, genealogical works, and maqtal narratives must be compared. Al-Fudayl's Amr ibn Subayh attribution conflicts with Abu al-Faraj's Uthman-and-Hamdani report, while al-Tabari assigns that pair to Abd al-Rahman; a careful profile therefore separates the secure family attribution from disputed event details. Ziyarat tradition preserves his name within the collective memory of the martyrs. Historical caution does not diminish that respect; it clarifies where the available sources agree and where further human review is required.

The family attribution as a son of Aqil is retained, but early and later sources conflict over the distinct identity and death report. Al-Fudayl ibn al-Zubayr lists an unnamed umm walad and names Amr ibn Subayh. Abu al-Faraj al-Isfahani, citing al-Mada'ini, attributes the killing of Abdullah al-Akbar ibn Aqil to Uthman ibn Khalid and a Hamdani participant, while al-Tabari's Abu Mikhnaf narrative assigns that same pair to Abd al-Rahman ibn Aqil. The profile therefore remains variant and Under Review.
