Burayr ibn Khudayr al-Hamdani

Source status: Strongly represented in core sources

🌿 Lineage and family background

He belonged to Banu Mishraq, a branch of Hamdan, and resided in Kufa. His father is preserved as Khudayr. Some manuscripts vary in the spelling of his name or his father's name, but Burayr ibn Khudayr al-Hamdani al-Mishraqi is the recognized and established form.

⚔️ Role in the Karbala movement

A distinguished Qur'an reciter and teacher in the Mosque of Kufa, a respected elder of Hamdan, an orator for Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, and a loyal companion who united learning, worship, courage, and martyrdom on Ashura.

Burayr ibn Khudayr al-Hamdani, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, was a renowned reciter and teacher of the Qur'an in the Mosque of Kufa, a devoted worshipper, and a respected elder of Hamdan. At Karbala, his personality represents a remarkable union of learning, moral counsel, and courageous action. He belonged to Banu Mishraq of Hamdan and possessed a deep attachment to Ahl al-Bayt. His teaching of the Qur'an and religious guidance in Kufa gave him not only tribal standing but also scholarly and spiritual authority. When the movement of Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, became known, Burayr joined the caravan and remained steadfast until Karbala. The separate stages of his journey are not fully narrated, but his presence before Ashura, high standing in the camp, and loyalty to the Imam are clearly preserved. On the eve of Ashura, while the companions were engaged in worship and preparation, Burayr shared a cheerful exchange with Abd al-Rahman ibn Abd Rabbih al-Ansari, May Allah Be Pleased With Him. Abd al-Rahman reminded him that he did not normally joke, and Burayr explained that the approaching honor had filled his heart with joy. On Ashura, Burayr sought permission from Imam Husayn to address the opposing army. He warned them concerning the sanctity of the family of the Messenger of Allah, Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him, the denial of the water of the Euphrates, and the treatment of Ahl al-Bayt. His speech rested on moral reasoning and religious proof. He reminded the army that the family whose protection was the responsibility of the Muslim community had been surrounded, and its children and women were being subjected to thirst. His purpose was to clarify the truth and seek an end to bloodshed until the final moment. Yazid ibn Ma'qil challenged him in the battlefield. The two invoked divine judgment concerning truth and falsehood and then entered single combat. Burayr defeated and killed him, demonstrating the unity of religious conviction and physical courage. Radi ibn Munqidh al-Abdi then attacked him. They grappled, and Burayr brought him to the ground and overpowered him. While Burayr held him down, Ka'b ibn Jabir al-Azdi attacked with a spear and sword and killed Burayr. When Ka'b returned to his family, a woman of his household—reported in the narrative as his wife or sister—severely rebuked him for killing the leading Qur'an reciter. Her reaction shows that Burayr's scholarly and religious standing was recognized even within the household of the opposing side, and that his death was not viewed as an ordinary battlefield event. Burayr's biography does not require inflated combat numbers or unnecessary narrative expansion. His service to the Qur'an in the Mosque of Kufa, moral counsel on Ashura, steadfastness in combat, and martyrdom fully establish his place. This profile inherits the collective Karbala martyrs location. It does not assert a separate grave, independent shrine, or distinct map marker for Burayr. His memory remains a luminous example of joining Qur'anic knowledge with truth-telling, moral proof, and practical sacrifice.

🏛️ Historical importance

Burayr's historical importance lies in his presence at Karbala not merely as a fighter but as a teacher of the Qur'an and a moral orator. His scholarly life and martyrdom became two stages of the same religious responsibility. His speech presented the denial of water and the siege of Ahl al-Bayt not merely as military tactics but as a moral betrayal of the family of the Messenger of Allah. His voice therefore forms an important part of the religious proof of Karbala. The invocation of divine judgment and duel with Yazid ibn Ma'qil, his overpowering of Radi ibn Munqidh, and martyrdom through the attack of Ka'b ibn Jabir reveal his steadfastness. The rebuke by a woman of the killer's household—reported as his wife or sister—preserved testimony to Burayr's scholarly standing even within the opposing household. The shared Karbala location preserves his memory with the collective martyrs. His profile teaches that true service to the Qur'an is completed through teaching, speaking truth, supporting the oppressed, and practical sacrifice when required.

The early narrative preserves Burayr's established identity, his standing as a Qur'an reciter, the cheerful exchange on the eve of Ashura, his moral address to the opposing army, the duel with Yazid ibn Ma'qil, his grappling with Radi ibn Munqidh and his death in the attack of Ka'b ibn Jabir. The household rebuke is cautiously recorded as coming from a woman described in the report as Ka'b's wife or sister. The descriptive phrase 'Qur'an Reciter of Kufa' was retained in the biography but removed from alternative-name fields because it is a role-title rather than a separate attested personal name. Later inflated casualty totals were excluded.
