Zahir, Mawla of Amr ibn al-Hamiq al-Khuza'i, May Allah Be Pleased With Him
🌿 Lineage and family background
Recognized devotional and rijal tradition preserves him as Zahir, mawla of Amr ibn al-Hamiq al-Khuza'i. Later works use forms such as Zahir ibn Amr al-Kindi and Zahir al-Aslami, but identity with the Companion Zahir ibn al-Aswad al-Aslami is not established. His parents and complete pedigree are not preserved.
⚔️ Role in the Karbala movement
A loyal supporter of Ahl al-Bayt associated with Amr ibn al-Hamiq al-Khuza'i through companionship and allegiance, and remembered in the recognized Karbala tradition as martyred with Imam Husayn on Ashura.
The safest preserved designation of this martyr in devotional and rijal tradition is Zahir, mawla or close associate of Amr ibn al-Hamiq al-Khuza'i. Later Karbala works use forms such as Zahir ibn Amr al-Kindi, Zahir ibn Umar al-Aslami al-Kindi, and Zahir al-Aslami. These name forms make the profile variant, but they do not erase the basic remembrance of a martyr named Zahir at Karbala. Some later rijal and biographical authors identified him with Zahir ibn al-Aswad al-Aslami, Abu Majza'a. An independent Companion biography connects Zahir ibn al-Aswad with the Pledge of Ridwan and Khaybar, but several researchers distinguish the two men. Companionship and the Pledge under the Tree are therefore not presented here as established attributes of the Karbala martyr. The designation mawla expresses his close relationship with Amr ibn al-Hamiq al-Khuza'i. In this context it does not mean master or blood descendant; it may indicate companionship, alliance, allegiance, affiliation, or political and religious support. Later tradition also connects Zahir with the period in which Amr ibn al-Hamiq was politically pursued. Later biography reports that Zahir came for pilgrimage in 60 AH, met Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, and accompanied him to Karbala. The exact place of meeting, their conversation, and a fixed responsibility in the caravan are not preserved in a strong early report, so these details are retained as later biographical tradition. Devotional texts, martyr lists, and later Karbala biography count him among the martyrs of Ashura. Some authors place him among those killed in the first general assault. No strong and uniform early notice preserves his individual killer, rajaz, wounds, or a number of enemy casualties. Two evidentiary levels must remain separate. The name Zahir, mawla of Amr ibn al-Hamiq, and martyrdom at Karbala belong to a recognized devotional and rijal tradition, whereas transferring the full Companion biography of Zahir ibn al-Aswad al-Aslami to this martyr is a later and disputed identification. The profile is therefore classified as variant with research Level B. The existence of a Karbala martyr named Zahir, his affiliative relationship with Amr ibn al-Hamiq, and his Ashura martyrdom are reasonably preserved, while his personal pedigree, Companion status, and early life remain uncertain. This profile inherits the collective Karbala martyrs location. It does not establish a separate verified grave, independent shrine, or distinct map marker for Zahir. His memory preserves loyalty to Ahl al-Bayt, steadfastness under political pressure, and final support for Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him.
🏛️ Historical importance
Zahir's historical importance lies both in martyrdom at Karbala and in a complex problem of identification. His entry shows how a short devotional-list name became connected in later rijal literature with a wider Companion biography, while the two evidentiary levels must remain separate. His affiliative relationship with Amr ibn al-Hamiq, support for Imam Husayn, and Ashura martyrdom are preserved in the recognized tradition. Companionship, the Pledge of Ridwan, Khaybar, and the extended pedigree depend upon the disputed identification with Zahir ibn al-Aswad al-Aslami. The collective Karbala location preserves his memory among the martyrs without creating an unsupported separate grave. The profile makes the name variation visible while retaining the historical meaning of loyalty to Ahl al-Bayt.

Rijal al-Tusi lists “Zahir, companion of Amr ibn al-Hamiq” among the companions of Imam al-Husayn. Rijal al-Najashi independently preserves a Zahir, mawla of Amr ibn al-Hamiq, through the ancestry of Muhammad ibn Sinan. Later Karbala works use the forms Zahir ibn Amr al-Kindi and Zahir al-Aslami. A separate Companion biography belongs to Zahir ibn al-Aswad al-Aslami; transferring the Pledge of Ridwan, Khaybar and his complete Companion biography to the Karbala martyr remains disputed.

📜How did these reports reach us? — Open the short explanation
This atlas does not accept or reject a report solely because of an author’s school affiliation. Abu Mikhnaf was an early Kufan collector whose material was also preserved by broad Muslim historians such as al-Tabari; Shaykh al-Mufid was an Imami scholar who used earlier historical material in al-Irshad. Each claim is presented after considering chronological proximity, transmission, shared-source dependence, and comparison with other works.
