Amr ibn Qaraza al-Ansari

Source status: Strongly represented in core sources

🌿 Lineage and family background

Son of Qaraza ibn Ka'b al-Ansari, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, from the Khazraj and associated with Kufa. His father was a Companion and transmitter of the Prophet Muhammad, Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him, and served in Kufa under Imam Ali, Peace Be Upon Him. A brother, named Ali or Zubayr in variant reports, was in Umar ibn Sa'd's army.

⚔️ Role in the Karbala movement

An Ansari supporter of Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, who carried a message connected with negotiations and fought in the Imam's defence on Ashura.

Amr ibn Qaraza al-Ansari, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, was a Kufan Ansari from the Khazraj. His full name is transmitted as Amr ibn Qaraza ibn Ka'b al-Khazraji al-Ansari. The core early report of his martyrdom and the reaction of his brother Ali ibn Qaraza is preserved through Abu Mikhnaf in al-Tabari, while later maqtal and biographical sources add further details. His father, Qaraza ibn Ka'b, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, is counted among the Companions and transmitters of the Prophet Muhammad, Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him. Historical sources also associate him with administrative and military service in Kufa under Imam Ali, Peace Be Upon Him. This background connected Amr with the Ansari and Alid tradition of Kufa. The available sources do not preserve with certainty the exact day on which Amr joined Imam Husayn's caravan. Some later biographical sources identify him as a messenger between Imam Husayn and Umar ibn Sa'd during the early days of Muharram, including an invitation to a nighttime meeting. On Ashura, the early report attributed to Abu Mikhnaf presents him advancing in defence of Imam Husayn and reciting verses expressing the resolve to protect the honor of the Ansar. The report establishes his loyalty and direct defence, but does not preserve a certain casualty count or a complete sequence of individual combat. After his martyrdom, a brother whose name appears as Ali in some sources and Zubayr in others addressed Imam Husayn from the army of Umar ibn Sa'd and blamed the Imam for his brother's death. The Imam replied that God had guided Amr and left the brother astray. When the brother attacked, Nafi ibn Hilal, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, struck him with a spear, and his companions removed him from the field. This contrast between brothers is an unusual feature of Amr's biography. Two members of one household chose opposite camps at Karbala, and the early account interprets the difference through guidance and moral choice rather than lineage alone. Later maqtal and devotional tradition famously describes Amr standing before Imam Husayn as a shield, receiving arrows and spears on his body, and asking before death whether he had fulfilled his covenant. The scene is especially prominent in al-Luhuf and later pulpit literature, while the concise earlier report of Abu Mikhnaf does not preserve the entire wording in that form. The sources do not give uniform and strong details about his killer, age, spouse, children, or exact number of wounds. The profile therefore centers the established elements of message-carrying, early combat, the moral contrast with his brother, and martyrdom. This profile inherits the collective Karbala martyrs location and does not establish a separate grave or independent shrine for Amr. His memory highlights Ansari loyalty, defence of the Imam, and the different moral choices made within a single family.

🏛️ Historical importance

Amr's historical importance lies in the combination of Ansari lineage, Kufan background, message-carrying for Imam Husayn, and direct battlefield defence. His martyrdom is clearly preserved in the early narrative, and the presence of his brother in the opposing army gives his choice additional moral meaning. The distinction between early and later narration is especially important in his case. Abu Mikhnaf's concise combat report and the exchange involving his brother are comparatively early, while the detailed scene of shielding the Imam with his body and asking a final question became more prominent in later maqtal and devotional memory. The shared martyrs location preserves his memory in the collective history of Karbala without creating a separate grave. His profile demonstrates that alignment at Karbala was not automatically determined by tribe or family; each person made an individual moral choice.

Al-Tabari's Abu Mikhnaf report at vol. 5, p. 434 directly supports Amr's combat, martyrdom, brother Ali's accusation and Imam Husayn's reply. Ibsar al-Ayn, p. 155, supports the full Ansari-Khazraji lineage, the father Qaraza's Companion status and the later messenger tradition. Al-Baladhuri preserves Zubayr as a brother-name variant. The shielding scene and final question belong to later maqtal/devotional transmission and are kept explicitly attributed. Age, killer, spouse, children and wound count remain unverified. The shared-parent location is collective and not proof of a separate grave.

This atlas does not accept or reject a report solely because of an author’s school affiliation. Abu Mikhnaf was an early Kufan collector whose material was also preserved by broad Muslim historians such as al-Tabari; Shaykh al-Mufid was an Imami scholar who used earlier historical material in al-Irshad. Each claim is presented after considering chronological proximity, transmission, shared-source dependence, and comparison with other works.
