Imran ibn Ka'b al-Ansari, May Allah Be Pleased With Him

Source status: Varies across source lists

🌿 Lineage and family background

The early name-list preserves the form Imran ibn Ka'b al-Ansari. Later devotional and biographical traditions also give Umar ibn Abi Ka'b and Imran ibn Ka'b ibn al-Harith al-Ashja'i. Some modern critical work has even raised a possible identification with Amr ibn Qaraza al-Ansari; therefore the exact name, father, and tribal affiliation remain unresolved.

⚔️ Role in the Karbala movement

A supporter of Imam Husayn whose name is preserved among the Ansari martyrs in an early list, while variant name and tribal forms remain unresolved.

Imran ibn Ka'b al-Ansari, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, is named by al-Fudayl ibn al-Zubayr al-Kufi among the Ansari martyrs. This entry is the principal evidence for his martyrdom with Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, at Karbala. The form of his name is not uniform across the sources. Some later ziyarat and name-lists give Umar ibn Abi Ka'b, while critical compilations also discuss the form Imran ibn Ka'b ibn al-Harith al-Ashja'i. The difference may reflect scribal variation, conflation, or separate identifications, and the available evidence does not permit a final conclusion. The relationship between the Ansari and Ashja'i attributions is likewise not fully preserved. This profile therefore retains the early Ansari form as its base while recording the other forms as variants rather than declaring one complete genealogy certain. Reliable early sources do not preserve details of his childhood, family, association with Kufa or Medina, or journey to Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him. Later notices are brief and should not be expanded into a constructed biography. The early list establishes his name among the martyrs but does not identify his killer or preserve an individual combat account, final words, or secure battlefield position. A report that he died in an initial assault appears in some later compilations and should not be treated as an equally early fact. Imran, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, remains part of the collective remembrance of the martyrs through this preserved name. His profile uses the shared Karbala location and does not assert a separate grave, shrine, or map marker.

🏛️ Historical importance

Imran's entry shows how a brief early name can preserve historical memory even when a full biography has disappeared. His placement among the Ansari martyrs reflects the breadth of the community that supported Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him. The variation in his name is also an important case of textual criticism. Imran ibn Ka'b, Umar ibn Abi Ka'b, and the Ashja'i attribution should not be merged into one certain identity without further evidence, which is why his source status remains variant.

Tasmiyat, p. 153 entry 53, securely preserves the name Imran ibn Ka'b al-Ansari among the Ansari martyrs. Ansar al-Husayn treats Imran ibn Ka'b ibn al-Harith al-Ashja'i, Imran ibn Ka'b and Umar ibn Abi Ka'b as likely scribal forms of one person. Al-Sahih min Maqtal Sayyid al-Shuhada also records a critical proposal that this entry may overlap with Amr ibn Qaraza. These are competing identifications, not independent proof of a complete genealogy. The early list does not name a killer, individual combat, journey or separate grave. source_status remains variant, research remains Under Review, and the shared-parent location does not establish an individual burial.

This atlas does not accept or reject a report solely because of an author’s school affiliation. Abu Mikhnaf was an early Kufan collector whose material was also preserved by broad Muslim historians such as al-Tabari; Shaykh al-Mufid was an Imami scholar who used earlier historical material in al-Irshad. Each claim is presented after considering chronological proximity, transmission, shared-source dependence, and comparison with other works.
