Abd al-Rahman ibn Abd Rabb al-Ansari

Source status: Strongly represented in core sources

🌿 Lineage and family background

An Ansari elder of the Khazraj, whose father is named Abd Rabb. Later hadith and rijal sources count him among the Companions of the Prophet Muhammad, Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him, and the associates of Imam Ali, Peace Be Upon Him; the available sources do not preserve his mother, spouse, or children with certainty.

⚔️ Role in the Karbala movement

A Khazraji Ansari elder associated with testimony to Ghadir and a martyr among the supporters of Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him; some sources place his martyrdom in the first general attack.

Abd al-Rahman ibn Abd Rabb al-Ansari, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, was an Ansari elder from the Khazraj and the son of Abd Rabb. His name is well represented in recognized lists of the martyrs of Karbala, and his support for Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, is a stable part of the roster. Later hadith and biographical sources count him among the Companions of the Prophet Muhammad, Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him, and among the associates of Imam Ali, Peace Be Upon Him. These sources also connect him with the Event of Ghadir and the transmission of the Hadith of Ghadir. In the report of al-Ruhba, Imam Ali asked those who had witnessed Ghadir to stand and testify. Abd al-Rahman is named among those who bore witness to the Prophet's declaration concerning Ali. Later rijal material also states that Imam Ali taught him the Qur'an, indicating a longer religious and intellectual association. Biographical tradition says that Abd al-Rahman joined Imam Husayn's caravan from Makkah. The earliest Karbala materials do not preserve every stage of his journey, the date of joining, or a distinct office in the caravan, so these details are stated without unnecessary expansion. A report connected with Tasu'a describes an exchange between Abd al-Rahman and Burayr ibn Khudayr. When Burayr showed unusual lightness in that grave hour, Abd al-Rahman reminded him that it was not a time for joking. Burayr answered that his joy came from the nearness of martyrdom, a scene preserved as a sign of the companions' readiness. The early and recognized sources do not provide a uniform account of Abd al-Rahman's individual combat, rajaz, killer, or wounds. Some later historians place his martyrdom in the first general assault of Umar ibn Sa'd's army, but the sequence is not described with equal detail in all sources. His recurring presence in martyr lists, hadith material, and biographical memory supports his inclusion as a core profile. The available evidence does not preserve his age, mother, wife, children, or a separate final speech with certainty, and the profile does not fill those gaps with conjecture. This profile inherits the collective location of the martyrs of Karbala and does not establish a separate grave or shrine. Abd al-Rahman's memory joins companionship, testimony at Ghadir, association with Imam Ali, and final loyalty to Imam Husayn in one continuous moral biography.

🏛️ Historical importance

Abd al-Rahman's historical importance lies in the long continuity between companionship, testimony at Ghadir, association with Imam Ali, and martyrdom at Karbala. His support appears as the culmination of an enduring religious commitment rather than a momentary battlefield decision. The Karbala detail about him is concise, while the Ghadir testimony, al-Ruhba report, Qur'anic instruction, and exchange with Burayr come from different hadith, biographical, and historical layers. Keeping these source levels distinct produces a coherent but cautious profile. The shared martyrs location preserves his memory within Karbala's collective sacred geography without creating a false separate grave. His life shows how sustained ethical commitment can remain historically significant even when the surviving battle detail is limited.

Martyr lists support his core Karbala identity. Ibn Hajar's al-Isaba, vol. 4, pp. 276–277, records him among those named in the Ghadir testimony tradition. Al-Ghadir, vol. 1, p. 340, preserves the al-Ruhba witness report; al-Tabari's cited edition records the Burayr exchange at vol. 5, p. 423. Ibsar al-Ayn records his biographical and Karbala entry at p. 157, correcting the previous p. 158 citation, and places him among the first-assault martyrs. The exact journey, individual combat, killer, age, spouse, children and final speech are not equally established.
