Abu Bakr ibn al-Hasan
🌿 Lineage and family background
A son of Imam Hasan al-Mujtaba, Peace Be Upon Him, and a nephew of Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him. Abu Bakr is a kunya and the personal name is uncertain; some later works identify him as Abdullah al-Akbar. Maqtal tradition generally describes his mother as an umm walad and sometimes as the mother of al-Qasim.
⚔️ Role in the Karbala movement
A son of Imam Hasan, Peace Be Upon Him, and a Hashimite member of the Husayni caravan whose name is preserved in martyr lists and who was killed by an arrow on Ashura.
Abu Bakr ibn al-Hasan, Peace Be Upon Him, was a son of Imam Hasan al-Mujtaba, Peace Be Upon Him, and a nephew of Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him. His name appears in several rosters of the Hashimite martyrs of Karbala, but the surviving detail is much more limited than for al-Qasim or Abdullah ibn al-Hasan. Abu Bakr is a kunya, not a securely established personal name. Some later works identify him as Abdullah al-Akbar ibn al-Hasan, while early lists often record only Abu Bakr ibn al-Hasan. Modern genealogical discussions sometimes suggest possible overlap with Abdullah ibn al-Hasan, but the Abu Mikhnaf material lists the two as separate martyrs. Later maqtal tradition describes his mother as an umm walad and sometimes identifies her as the mother of al-Qasim. The name Ramla also appears in later tradition, but the concise early notice does not explicitly name his mother. A complete maternal genealogy has therefore not been asserted. He travelled with the Husayni caravan from the Hijaz toward Iraq and remained with his uncle Imam Husayn at Karbala. The sources preserve no detailed independent conversation, service, or responsibility for him on the journey. His historical identity rests chiefly on the martyr rosters and a concise death report. The Abu Mikhnaf report preserved by al-Tabari states that Abdullah ibn Uqba al-Ghanawi shot Abu Bakr ibn al-Hasan with an arrow and killed him. Abu al-Faraj al-Isfahani also transmits, through al-Mada'ini and Abu Mikhnaf, the attribution to Abdullah or Uqba al-Ghanawi. This is the strongest specific historical detail preserved about him. The order of his death varies. Abu al-Faraj places his martyrdom before that of al-Qasim, while al-Tabari, al-Shaykh al-Mufid, and other arrangements place him after al-Qasim or within a grouped sequence of Hashimite deaths. The intensity of the battle and differences among name lists make a precise sequence uncertain. Later maqtal books attribute rajaz or fuller combat scenes to him, but the early report preserves little beyond death by an arrow. Exact age, large casualty counts, a marriage, or an extended dialogue should not be added without stronger evidence. Because of possible overlap with Abdullah ibn al-Hasan, his source status remains variant. He has not been removed, because Abu Mikhnaf, Maqatil al-Talibiyyin, al-Irshad, and numerous later rosters preserve Abu Bakr ibn al-Hasan as an independent name. This profile inherits the collective Karbala martyrs location and does not assert a separate grave or shrine. His importance lies in the collective participation of Imam Hasan's family, the preservation of lesser-documented martyrs, and the honest retention of source variation within the roster.
🏛️ Historical importance
Abu Bakr ibn al-Hasan is important as a martyr whose name is preserved in several significant rosters even though his individual biography is very brief. That limitation is itself a research result and should not be filled with invented narrative. The report of death by the arrow of Abdullah ibn Uqba al-Ghanawi is comparatively strong, while the personal name, mother, sequence, and possible identification with Abdullah ibn al-Hasan remain disputed. The profile therefore remains variant without being removed. His shared Karbala location preserves the collective sacrifice of Imam Hasan's household and shows that historical memory may rest on concise but credible name-list evidence rather than only on famous extended stories.

The Abu Mikhnaf material preserved by al-Tabari lists Abu Bakr ibn al-Hasan separately from Abdullah ibn al-Hasan and attributes his death by arrow to Abdullah ibn Uqba al-Ghanawi. Maqatil al-Talibiyyin, al-Irshad and Tasmiyat preserve the independent name, while Maqatil al-Talibiyyin describes him and al-Qasim as full brothers. Later works differ over his personal name, the name of his mother and the order of martyrdom. Possible identity overlap is acknowledged through source_status=variant, while the recurrent early name prevents deletion. Later rajaz and extended battle scenes are not treated as early facts. The shared-parent location does not establish a separate grave.

📜How did these reports reach us? — Open the short explanation
This atlas does not accept or reject a report solely because of an author’s school affiliation. Abu Mikhnaf was an early Kufan collector whose material was also preserved by broad Muslim historians such as al-Tabari; Shaykh al-Mufid was an Imami scholar who used earlier historical material in al-Irshad. Each claim is presented after considering chronological proximity, transmission, shared-source dependence, and comparison with other works.
