Munjih ibn Sahm

Source status: Strongly represented in core sources

🌿 Lineage and family background

The early Tasmiyat roster records Munjih as a mawla of Imam Husayn, without the patronymic ibn Sahm. Later biographies identify him as Munjih ibn Sahm, name Sahm as his father, and describe his mother as a freed household attendant connected with Ahl al-Bayt. His name and martyrdom therefore have early support, while the fuller family account remains later evidence.

⚔️ Role in the Karbala movement

A household-associated loyalist recorded in the early martyr roster as a mawla of Imam Husayn, later identified as Munjih ibn Sahm, and martyred at Karbala.

The early Tasmiyat roster records Munjih, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, as a mawla of Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, among those killed with him at Karbala. Later biographies identify him as Munjih ibn Sahm, while the form Munhij reflects a transmission or spelling variant. The strongest early evidence establishes his name, household association and martyrdom, but it does not give the patronymic ibn Sahm or a detailed account of his age, marriage, children, speech or individual combat. The brief early roster must therefore remain distinct from the fuller later biography. Later biographical tradition names Sahm as his father and describes his mother as a freed attendant connected with the household of Ahl al-Bayt. Some later works also associate him with service to Ali ibn Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him. These family and household details are important later reports, not explicit statements of the early martyr list. Later biographies say that Munjih remained with the household caravan from Medina to Makkah and toward Iraq. The sources do not identify every duty he performed on the journey. His place is best understood through the continuing bonds of service, companionship and loyalty. The early Tasmiyat roster names Hassan ibn Bakr al-Hanzali as his killer but preserves no detailed individual combat scene. Later works place him among those killed in the first general assault. The killer attribution is therefore retained with its source, while the exact battlefield sequence remains cautious. Munjih's biography is historically valuable because it reveals the human network surrounding the household of Imam Husayn. Karbala was not sustained only by famous tribal leaders and warriors; attendants and freed household associates also accepted the danger of the journey and remained when withdrawal was possible. His sacrifice gives dignity to forms of service that ordinary political history often overlooks. The available evidence does not justify filling the silence with imaginary speeches or combat numbers. What remains secure is his connection with the household, his companionship on the road, and his death among the supporters at Karbala. This profile inherits the collective location of the martyrs of Karbala. It does not establish a separately identifiable grave, independent shrine, or distinct map marker for Munjih ibn Sahm. His remembrance belongs to the shared sacred geography of the martyrs.

🏛️ Historical importance

Munjih is historically important because his profile connects household service with the final sacrifice at Karbala. His presence shows that the circle of loyalty around Imam Husayn included attendants and freed household associates as well as better-known tribal supporters. The contrast between the short early roster and the fuller later biography is also methodologically valuable. It permits his martyrdom and household connection to be preserved while preventing later family and battlefield details from being treated as equally early evidence. The shared Karbala location keeps his memory within the collective martyrs tradition without manufacturing a separate grave. His profile gives dignified recognition to a lesser-known supporter whose loyalty was expressed through continuous service and steadfast presence.

Al-Fudayl ibn al-Zubayr's early Tasmiyat roster records Munjih as a mawla of Imam Husayn and names Hassan ibn Bakr al-Hanzali as his killer. It does not supply the patronymic ibn Sahm. Later biographical and genealogical works identify him as Munjih ibn Sahm, preserve the variant Munhij, give Sahm as his father, describe his mother as a freed household attendant, and associate him with the Ahl al-Bayt household. Later sources also place him in the first general assault. The shared-parent location does not establish an individual grave.

This atlas does not accept or reject a report solely because of an author’s school affiliation. Abu Mikhnaf was an early Kufan collector whose material was also preserved by broad Muslim historians such as al-Tabari; Shaykh al-Mufid was an Imami scholar who used earlier historical material in al-Irshad. Each claim is presented after considering chronological proximity, transmission, shared-source dependence, and comparison with other works.
