Qarib ibn Abdullah

Source status: Strongly represented in core sources

🌿 Lineage and family background

An early martyr list preserves him as Qarib al-Daylami, mawla of Imam Husayn, while later works also transmit the nisba al-Du'ali. Later biographical books name his mother as Fakiha and his father as Abdullah ibn Urayqit. Fakiha was connected with the household of Imam Husayn, particularly the home of Lady al-Rabab, Peace Be Upon Her. These family details are retained as later-source tradition.

⚔️ Role in the Karbala movement

An attendant and loyal associate of the household of Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, who accompanied the caravan from Medina to Makkah and then to Karbala and was martyred on Ashura.

An early martyr list preserves Qarib, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, as Qarib al-Daylami, mawla of Imam Husayn. Later tradition also transmits al-Du'ali and the name Qarib ibn Abdullah. His basic identity rests on service to the household, long companionship, and martyrdom at Karbala. Later biographical works name his mother as Fakiha. She served in the household of Lady al-Rabab, Peace Be Upon Her, and lived close to the family of Imam Husayn. His father is named as Abdullah ibn Urayqit. Qarib was raised within the household of Imam Husayn and transformed a relationship of service into one of faithful companionship. When Imam Husayn travelled from Medina to Makkah, Qarib departed with the family and companions. He remained with the caravan during the journey from Makkah toward Iraq and during the encampment at Karbala. No separate political office, messenger assignment, or military command is preserved for him. His service consisted principally of continuous presence with the household, assistance during the hardships of travel, and refusal to leave in the face of danger. On Ashura, he was present with the companions of Imam Husayn. Later maqtal works place him among those martyred in the first general assault. His individual killer, rajaz, and detailed sequence of combat are not preserved. His martyrdom shows that attendants connected with the household did not abandon the caravan when danger became severe. He rose above social position and demonstrated loyalty and sacrifice through action. Reports also mention the presence of his mother Fakiha during the journey to Karbala. This family companionship shows that the caravan included not only fighting men but also families connected through household service. His age, marriage, children, and a separate burial place are not preserved. His clear historical identity is that of an attendant of Imam Husayn, a loyal member of the caravan, and a martyr of Karbala. This profile inherits the collective Karbala martyrs location. It does not assert a separate grave, independent shrine, or distinct map marker for Qarib.

🏛️ Historical importance

Qarib's historical importance highlights the loyalty of attendants connected with the household of Imam Husayn. His presence shows that support at Karbala was not limited to prominent tribal leaders and warriors. Remaining with the caravan from Medina to Karbala demonstrates continuous companionship. He did not leave the household at the final stage of danger and sacrificed his life on Ashura. The shared Karbala location preserves his memory with the collective martyrs without asserting a separate grave. His profile brings together service, household attachment, and freely chosen moral loyalty.

The early martyr list preserves Qarib al-Daylami as a mawla of Imam Husayn. Later works also transmit al-Du'ali and expand the biography with the names Fakiha and Abdullah ibn Urayqit, household service, the Medina-Makkah-Karbala journey and first-assault placement. The core identity as a mawla and Ashura martyr is retained as stable, while the parentage, household narrative and exact assault placement are explicitly treated as later-source material. No individual killer, rajaz or separate grave is asserted.

This atlas does not accept or reject a report solely because of an author’s school affiliation. Abu Mikhnaf was an early Kufan collector whose material was also preserved by broad Muslim historians such as al-Tabari; Shaykh al-Mufid was an Imami scholar who used earlier historical material in al-Irshad. Each claim is presented after considering chronological proximity, transmission, shared-source dependence, and comparison with other works.
