He belonged to Abd al-Qays of Basra and is remembered with the nisbas al-Qaysi, al-Abdi, and al-Basri. The sources vary between Yazid and Zayd and between Thubayt and Nubayt, while his Abd al-Qays affiliation is comparatively well attested.
⚔️ Role in the Karbala movement
A leading Basran supporter who travelled with his sons Abd Allah and Ubayd Allah to support Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, joined him near Mecca, and was killed at Karbala.
Yazid ibn Thubayt al-Abdi was a supporter of Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, from Abd al-Qays in Basra. The sources also write his name as Zayd and his father's name as Thubayt or Nubayt, so these forms must be retained as identity variants. Al-Tabari's narrative from Abu Mikhnaf describes a small but active Basran circle that met in the house of Mariya bint Munqidh al-Abdiyya. Yazid ibn Thubayt belonged to this environment and decided to leave in support of Imam Husayn during a period of close political surveillance. According to the report, he had ten sons. He placed his intention to travel before them, and Abd Allah and Ubayd Allah chose to accompany their father. The sources do not preserve the circumstances or decisions of all the other sons in equal detail. Yazid ibn Thubayt departed with his two sons and a small number of other Basran supporters. The narrative indicates that they used a less travelled route to avoid interception, although every stage and date of the journey is not preserved. They met Imam Husayn at al-Abtah near Mecca. The account preserves their mutual welcome and joy, after which the Basran group accompanied the Imam's caravan on its onward journey. Yazid ibn Thubayt, Abd Allah, and Ubayd Allah remained with Imam Husayn to Karbala and were killed on Ashura. Later reports differ over their individual attacks, killers, and exact sequence of martyrdom, while the early account does not preserve those details with certainty. His story gives prominence to support arriving from Basra. The Karbala movement was not limited to persons from Kufa or the Hijaz; the journey of a father and two sons from Basra is an important example of its wider moral reach. This profile inherits the collective Karbala martyrs location. It does not establish a separate grave, an independent shrine, or a distinct map marker for Yazid ibn Thubayt, May Allah Be Pleased With Him.

Yazid ibn Thubayt is historically important because al-Tabari's narrative preserves an organized and risky journey from Basra to Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him. Al-Tabari's Abu Mikhnaf narrative supports the Basran gathering, ten sons, the voluntary choice of Abd Allah and Ubayd Allah, the guarded journey, meeting at al-Abtah and martyrdom of the father and both sons. 📜How did these reports reach us? — Open the short explanation
This atlas does not accept or reject a report solely because of an author’s school affiliation. Abu Mikhnaf was an early Kufan collector whose material was also preserved by broad Muslim historians such as al-Tabari; Shaykh al-Mufid was an Imami scholar who used earlier historical material in al-Irshad. Each claim is presented after considering chronological proximity, transmission, shared-source dependence, and comparison with other works.
