Ja’far ibn Ali, Peace Be Upon Him

Source status: Strongly represented in core sources

🌿 Lineage and family background

Ja’far was a son of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib, Peace Be Upon Him. His mother was Lady Fatima bint Hizam al-Kilabiyya, known as Umm al-Banin, Peace Be Upon Her. He was a full brother of al-Abbas, Abdullah, and Uthman ibn Ali and a paternal brother of Imam Husayn.

⚔️ Role in the Karbala movement

A young son of Umm al-Banin, paternal brother of Imam Husayn, and full brother of al-Abbas who rejected safe-conduct and was killed while defending the Ahl al-Bayt on Ashura.

Ja’far ibn Ali, Peace Be Upon Him, was a young son of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib and Lady Fatima bint Hizam al-Kilabiyya, known as Umm al-Banin, Peace Be Upon Her. He was a paternal brother of Imam Husayn and a full brother of al-Abbas, Abdullah, and Uthman ibn Ali. He was killed with the Ahl al-Bayt on Ashura at Karbala. Later family memory sometimes connects his name with Ja’far al-Tayyar, the brother of Imam Ali and martyr of the Battle of Mu’ta. The intention behind the naming is not established in the early Karbala reports, so this association is retained only as a respectful later remembrance and not as a proven statement about Imam Ali’s choice of name. Maqatil al-Talibiyyin reports that Ja’far was nineteen years old when killed. The exact age is not repeated in every early narrative, but it is an important genealogical report that presents him as one of the youngest adult sons of Umm al-Banin present at Karbala. Ja’far is explicitly named in the early safe-conduct episode. Shamir called the sons of his tribal kinswoman and offered protection to al-Abbas, Ja’far, and Uthman. They rejected security that left Imam Husayn unprotected. The report provides direct evidence of Ja’far’s moral decision before the battle and should be distinguished from later embellished speeches. A report in Maqatil al-Talibiyyin says that al-Abbas asked Ja’far to advance before him because Ja’far had no children. The same transmission names Hani ibn Thubayt al-Hadrami as the man who killed him. This gives a specific battle sequence, although it remains one transmitted reconstruction rather than a detail repeated uniformly in all sources. Another report in the same work attributes Ja’far’s killing to Khawli ibn Yazid al-Asbahi. The variation between Hani and Khawli shows that the martyrdom itself is secure but the identity of the final attacker is not. Later rajaz and individual combat descriptions should therefore be cited cautiously and not treated as equally early evidence. Al-Tabari, al-Irshad, and the broader martyr lists preserve Ja’far among the sons of Imam Ali killed with Imam Husayn. His historical identity, parentage, rejection of safe-conduct, and Ashura martyrdom are strongly supported, while his exact combat details remain secondary to the clear fact of his loyalty to the Ahl al-Bayt. This profile inherits the shared Karbala parent location. No separately verified grave can be identified for Ja’far ibn Ali, so he is represented within the collective burial and devotional memory of the Ahl al-Bayt martyrs. His remembrance teaches youthful loyalty, family solidarity, and refusal to abandon a just cause for personal security.

🏛️ Historical importance

Ja’far ibn Ali is historically important as a clearly identified young son of Umm al-Banin who was killed with Imam Husayn. His presence in the safe-conduct episode provides direct early evidence of a conscious refusal to separate personal security from loyalty to the besieged Ahl al-Bayt. His reported age of nineteen and the competing names Hani ibn Thubayt and Khawli ibn Yazid belong to more specific martyrdom reports. Preserving the variation shows that strong identity and martyrdom evidence can coexist with uncertainty over the final attacker and individual battle sequence. The shared Karbala location honors his established place among the Ahl al-Bayt martyrs without inventing a separate grave. Ja’far’s memory represents youthful courage, family solidarity, and moral fidelity maintained under direct pressure.

Maqatil al-Talibiyyin supports Ja’far’s mother, reported age of nineteen, the report that al-Abbas asked him to advance, and variant killer reports naming Hani ibn Thubayt or Khawli ibn Yazid. The early Abu Mikhnaf safe-conduct report explicitly names Ja’far with al-Abbas and Uthman. Al-Tabari and al-Irshad support his identity among the sons of Imam Ali killed with Imam Husayn. The naming connection with Ja’far al-Tayyar remains later family memory rather than a proven naming intention. The Maqatil page note was changed to an independently verified online entry with pagination varying by edition. Principal identity and martyrdom claims remain core and Level A.
