Ja'far ibn Aqil

Source status: Strongly represented in core sources

🌿 Lineage and family background

Son of Aqil ibn Abi Talib, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, grandson of Abu Talib, nephew of Imam Ali, Peace Be Upon Him, and paternal cousin of Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him. Genealogical reports differ regarding his mother, including Umm al-Thaghr bint Amir al-Kilabiyya and another identification, so the complete maternal lineage is not certain.

⚔️ Role in the Karbala movement

A Hashimite member of Banu Aqil and paternal cousin of Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, who fought with Ahl al-Bayt and was martyred on Ashura.

Ja'far ibn Aqil, Peace Be Upon Him, belonged to the Aqili branch of Banu Hashim. He was a son of Aqil ibn Abi Talib, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, a grandson of Abu Talib, a nephew of Imam Ali, Peace Be Upon Him, and a paternal cousin of Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him. The genealogical material does not agree on his mother. Some works name Umm al-Thaghr bint Amir ibn al-Hissan al-Kilabiyya, while other reports preserve a different identification. It is therefore not appropriate to present one maternal name or tribe as undisputed. Ja'far belonged to a family that gave several lives to the Husayni movement. His brother Muslim ibn Aqil, Peace Be Upon Him, had already been martyred in Kufa as Imam Husayn's representative, while other sons and grandsons of Aqil were present at Karbala. This family setting makes Ja'far's participation part of the collective loyalty of Banu Aqil. The available early sources do not preserve with certainty whether Ja'far departed with the caravan from Medina, joined in Makkah, or reached the Imam at another stage. What is strongly preserved is his presence in the Husayni camp and his martyrdom on Ashura. The early reports differ about the person who killed Ja'far. The edited Abu Mikhnaf/Tabari presentation gives Abdullah ibn Azarah, or Urwah, al-Khath'ami as the archer; Maqatil al-Talibiyyin also gives Urwah ibn Abdullah al-Khath'ami. Another Tabari form and devotional lists name Bishr ibn Hawt al-Hamdani, while Tasmiyat gives Abdullah ibn Amr al-Khath'ami. The profile therefore records the conflict and does not make one killer attribution certain. Later maqtal literature attributes to Ja'far rajaz verses and a specified number of enemy fighters killed. The early concise account does not preserve these combat details with the same clarity, so uncertain numbers are not used to establish his courage. His name appears in devotional lists, Maqatil al-Talibiyyin, al-Irshad, and other rosters of Karbala martyrs. This repeated name-list presence supports a core source status, although his killer, mother, and exact battlefield sequence remain subjects of variation. This profile inherits the collective Karbala martyrs location. It does not assert a separate grave or independent shrine for Ja'far. His memory preserves the chain of loyalty linking Banu Aqil, the house of Abu Talib, and Imam Husayn from the sacrifice in Kufa to the martyrdoms at Karbala.

🏛️ Historical importance

Ja'far's importance lies in the continuing Husayni loyalty of Banu Aqil. His family sacrificed in both stages of the movement through Muslim ibn Aqil in Kufa and several Hashimite martyrs at Karbala. His basic identity and martyrdom are strong in the recognized lists, while his mother, killer, and detailed battlefield reports vary across early and later sources. The profile preserves these differences without turning rajaz verses, casualty numbers, or one disputed killer attribution into certain history. The shared Karbala location preserves his memory with the collective Hashimite martyrs. His biography demonstrates the value of name-list evidence, where a concise report gains deep meaning from the wider setting of family, loyalty, and movement.

Ja'far's recurring presence in al-Tabari, Maqatil al-Talibiyyin, al-Irshad and martyr lists supports core status. Maqatil gives his mother as Umm al-Thaghr bint Amir and also preserves another maternal form; Tasmiyat and other transmitted forms differ. Killer attributions also conflict: Abdullah ibn Azarah or Urwah al-Khath'ami, Bishr ibn Hawt al-Hamdani, and Abdullah ibn Amr al-Khath'ami all appear in recognized transmissions. The prior unsupported attribution to Khalid ibn Asad al-Juhani was removed because it appears to belong to a different Aqili martyr in the cited material.

📜How did these reports reach us? — Open the short explanation

This atlas does not accept or reject a report solely because of an author’s school affiliation. Abu Mikhnaf was an early Kufan collector whose material was also preserved by broad Muslim historians such as al-Tabari; Shaykh al-Mufid was an Imami scholar who used earlier historical material in al-Irshad. Each claim is presented after considering chronological proximity, transmission, shared-source dependence, and comparison with other works.
