Abdullah ibn Muslim ibn Aqil

Source status: Strongly represented in core sources

🌿 Lineage and family background

Abdullah ibn Muslim ibn Aqil, Peace Be Upon Him, was a son of Muslim ibn Aqil ibn Abi Talib, Peace Be Upon Him, and belonged to the Aqilid branch of Banu Hashim. An early martyr list and genealogical material identify his mother as Ruqayya, a daughter of Ali ibn Abi Talib, Peace Be Upon Him, while the available sources do not preserve further details of his family life uniformly.

⚔️ Role in the Karbala movement

A young martyr of Banu Aqil and the house of Abu Talib who remained with Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, on Ashura.

Abdullah ibn Muslim ibn Aqil, Peace Be Upon Him, was a son of Muslim ibn Aqil, Peace Be Upon Him, and a grandson of Aqil ibn Abi Talib. He therefore belonged to the Aqilid branch of the house of Abu Talib, a family represented both in the Kufan mission and in the final stand of Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, at Karbala. An early martyr list and genealogical material identify his mother as Ruqayya, daughter of Ali ibn Abi Talib, Peace Be Upon Her. Early historical sources do not provide a full and uniform account of his age, education, marriage, or early life, so the profile remains within the supported genealogical and event-based information. Muslim ibn Aqil, Peace Be Upon Him, had been sent by Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, to assess the invitations from Kufa. After Muslim's martyrdom, members of Banu Aqil remained with Imam Husayn, and Abdullah ibn Muslim was among the loyal company present through Ashura. The available narrative does not trace every stage of his journey separately. In the Abu Mikhnaf account preserved by al-Tabari, Amr ibn Subayh shot an arrow at Abdullah ibn Muslim. When Abdullah raised his hand to protect his brow, the arrow pinned his hand to his forehead; Amr then shot a second arrow that struck his heart. Some later retellings instead say that another assailant killed him with a spear, so the second-arrow version is retained as the stronger early report and the spear account is treated as a variant. Al-Fudayl ibn al-Zubayr's list also names Amr ibn Subayh, while preserving a variant attribution to Asad ibn Malik. The same roster also associates Amr ibn Subayh with the killing of Abdullah ibn Aqil, which helps explain why later retellings sometimes overlap or confuse the two Aqilid martyr reports. The central historical meaning of his martyrdom is that the abandonment and death of Muslim ibn Aqil in Kufa did not cause his family to withdraw from Imam Husayn. Abdullah's presence at Karbala illustrates the collective steadfastness of Banu Aqil and fidelity maintained after a severe earlier loss. Devotional and ziyarat memory respectfully includes him among the martyrs of Karbala and the defenders from the house of Abu Talib. This profile inherits the collective Karbala martyrs location and does not assert a separate grave, an independent shrine, or a distinct map marker.

🏛️ Historical importance

The martyrdom of Abdullah ibn Muslim ibn Aqil, Peace Be Upon Him, forms part of the shared sacrifice of Banu Aqil, whose members continued to support Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, despite the collapse of the Kufan movement. His name represents both an individual martyr and a continuing family and moral commitment. Amr ibn Subayh appears in the strong early narrative, but al-Fudayl ibn al-Zubayr also preserves a variant name and associates the same attacker with Abdullah ibn Aqil. The disagreement shows that the martyrdom itself can be stated with confidence while individual attributions require careful qualification. In ziyarat memory he is honored as a loyal young member of the house of Abu Talib and a martyr of Karbala. Presenting that memory responsibly requires respect, source classification, and care not to convert a collective burial association into an unsupported independent shrine claim.

The Abu Mikhnaf narrative preserved by al-Tabari describes Amr ibn Subayh pinning Abdullah ibn Muslim's hand to his forehead with one arrow and striking his heart with a second arrow. Some later retellings replace the second arrow with a spear thrust by another assailant, so that version is treated as a later variant. Al-Fudayl ibn al-Zubayr identifies his mother as Ruqayya bint Ali, names Amr ibn Subayh, and preserves Asad ibn Malik as a variant attribution. Because the same roster also associates Amr with Abdullah ibn Aqil, possible overlap between the two profiles is explicitly noted.
