Hajjaj ibn Masruq al-Ju'fi
🌿 Lineage and family background
A Kufan from the Ju'fi branch of Madhhij, whose father is named Masruq. Later rijal and biographical sources count him among the associates of Imam Ali, Peace Be Upon Him; the available sources do not preserve his mother, spouse, or children with certainty.
⚔️ Role in the Karbala movement
A Ju'fi supporter who served as the caller to prayer in Imam Husayn's caravan, performed duties at important stages of the journey, and was martyred on Ashura.
Al-Hajjaj ibn Masruq al-Ju'fi, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, was a Kufan from the Ju'fi branch of Madhhij. His name is preserved in recognized martyr lists, and later rijal sources count him among the associates of Imam Ali, Peace Be Upon Him. Biographical tradition states that when Imam Husayn reached Makkah from Medina, al-Hajjaj travelled from Kufa to Makkah and joined the Imam's caravan. The early sources do not separately preserve the exact date of his departure from Kufa or every stage of his travel, but his companionship on the journey from Makkah toward Iraq is well known. His clearest function in the caravan was calling the adhan. In the report of Abu Mikhnaf preserved by al-Tabari, when the force of al-Hurr ibn Yazid al-Riyahi, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, confronted the caravan at Dhu Husam and the noon prayer arrived, Imam Husayn ordered al-Hajjaj ibn Masruq to make the call to prayer. The adhan was more than an announcement of worship; it became part of a highly sensitive political and moral encounter. Imam Husayn addressed the Kufan letters, the reason for his arrival, and the rights of Ahl al-Bayt, after which al-Hurr and his men prayed behind the Imam. Al-Hajjaj's service in this scene links the caravan's worship with the Imam's public testimony. At the time of the afternoon prayer, the caravan's caller to prayer again made the adhan and iqama, although the name is not repeated at every occurrence. Later biographical works therefore describe al-Hajjaj as the muezzin of Imam Husayn. The title has a sound historical basis, without requiring that every prayer call be attributed to him with certainty. At Qasr Bani Muqatil, Imam Husayn sent a messenger to invite Ubayd Allah ibn al-Hurr al-Ju'fi. The early Abu Mikhnaf account does not name the messenger, while later biographical sources identify him as al-Hajjaj ibn Masruq. The identification is possible and well known, but the silence of the earliest text should also be acknowledged. His martyrdom on Ashura is preserved in the core martyr lists, but the early recognized sources do not uniformly preserve his killer, exact order of entry into combat, number of wounds, or a complete individual battle narrative. Later maqtal works give rajaz verses and casualty numbers, but these are not treated as certain biography. Reliable details about his age, mother, spouse, children, and occupation are unavailable. The strong foundation of his historical profile is his Ju'fi and Kufan background, companionship from Makkah, the adhan at Dhu Husam, and martyrdom at Karbala. This profile inherits the collective Karbala martyrs location and does not assert a separate grave or independent shrine for al-Hajjaj. His memory preserves a combination of worship, caravan organization, service, and final loyalty in which the call to prayer became a moral voice within history.
🏛️ Historical importance
Al-Hajjaj's historical importance lies especially in his role as muezzin, because the adhan at Dhu Husam brought together prayer, the first major encounter with the Kufan force, and Imam Husayn's public address. This role connects him with the entire Husayni journey rather than only the final combat. The clear and unclear limits of the early text are both important. The adhan at Dhu Husam is explicitly preserved, the messenger role at Qasr Bani Muqatil is a later identification, and detailed individual combat comes mainly from later maqtal literature. The shared martyrs location preserves his memory without asserting a separate grave. His profile shows that the service of Karbala's supporters was not limited to the sword; worship, communication, and organization of the caravan were also essential to the movement.

The Abu Mikhnaf material preserved by al-Tabari explicitly names al-Hajjaj ibn Masruq as the caller to prayer at Dhu Husam. Ibsar al-Ayn, p. 151, supports his Ju'fi-Madhhiji lineage, later companionship tradition, continuing muezzin role and the later identification of him and Yazid ibn Mughfil as messengers to Ubayd Allah ibn al-Hurr. The earliest Qasr Bani Muqatil account leaves the messenger unnamed, so that role remains a later identification. Al-Irshad preserves Masrur as a textual variant. His killer, age, family, exact combat order, rajaz and casualty figures remain unverified. The shared-parent location does not establish a separate grave.

📜How did these reports reach us? — Open the short explanation
This atlas does not accept or reject a report solely because of an author’s school affiliation. Abu Mikhnaf was an early Kufan collector whose material was also preserved by broad Muslim historians such as al-Tabari; Shaykh al-Mufid was an Imami scholar who used earlier historical material in al-Irshad. Each claim is presented after considering chronological proximity, transmission, shared-source dependence, and comparison with other works.
