Qays ibn Musahir al-Saydawi, May Allah Be Pleased With Him

Source status: Strongly represented in core sources

🌿 Lineage and family background

He belonged to Banu Sayda, a branch of Banu Asad. Genealogical transmissions extend his name as Qays ibn Musahir ibn Khalid, or Khulayd, ibn Jundab ibn Mundhir or Munqidh, and connect the title al-Nakri with an ancestor called Nakira ibn Sayda. His mother, spouse, children, and age are not preserved with certainty.

⚔️ Role in the Karbala movement

A trusted envoy who carried several letters between Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, and the people of Kufa; on his final mission he destroyed the letter to protect its recipients, publicly affirmed the Imam's cause in Kufa, and was martyred before Ashura.

Qays ibn Musahir al-Saydawi, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, was a Kufan supporter from Banu Sayda of Banu Asad. His biography is central to understanding the stage of letters, trust, covert communication, and political danger in the Karbala movement. When letters from the people of Kufa began to reach Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, in Makkah, Qays was counted among those who carried a large collection of messages. Some reports place him with Abd al-Rahman ibn Abdullah al-Arhabi and Amara al-Saluli among the messengers. When Imam Husayn sent Muslim ibn Aqil, Peace Be Upon Him, to Kufa, some sources state that Qays accompanied him. He is also associated with carrying Muslim's response to the Imam after the situation in Kufa and the pledges of support had been assessed. During Imam Husayn's journey from Makkah toward Iraq, the Imam entrusted Qays near al-Hajiz or Batn al-Rumma with a letter to the Kufans. The letter concerned the Imam's departure, Muslim ibn Aqil's report, and a request that supporters remain steadfast. Near al-Qadisiyya, a detachment led in al-Tabari's transmission by al-Husayn ibn Tamim attempted to seize him; other reports name al-Husayn ibn Numayr. Qays tore up or destroyed the letter so that the names of recipients and the communication network would not fall into the hands of the authorities. This act became a clear example of diplomatic trust and protection of companions. He was taken before Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad, who demanded the contents of the letter and the names of its recipients. Qays refused. He was then ordered to ascend the pulpit and speak against Imam Husayn and his family. From the pulpit, Qays praised Allah, invoked blessings upon the Prophet, Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him, and his family, and affirmed the honor of Imam Ali, Imam Hasan, and Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Them. He called the people to support Imam Husayn and rejected the policy of the oppressive authorities. He was then ordered to be thrown from the height of the governor's palace and was martyred. Some reports state that he died from the fall, while others say that he remained alive briefly and was then killed by another man. The precise final detail varies. When news of his martyrdom reached Imam Husayn, the Imam remembered his loyalty. The report gave the caravan clear evidence that Kufa had been closed, envoys were being killed, and the political situation had radically changed. Qays was a martyr of the Husayni movement before the battlefield of Ashura. This profile inherits the collective Karbala martyrs location because no separate verified shrine record for him is available in this database. The location inheritance does not place his martyrdom at Karbala and does not assert a separate grave; he was martyred in Kufa before Ashura.

🏛️ Historical importance

Qays's historical importance lies in his repeated diplomatic service. He was not merely the bearer of one letter, but was connected with several stages of communication among Makkah, Kufa, Muslim ibn Aqil, Peace Be Upon Him, and Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him. The report that he destroyed the letter, refused to disclose names, and transformed the governor's pulpit from a tool of propaganda into a call for Imam Husayn demonstrates trust, political insight, and courage. The precise final manner of death varies, but the core event is strong. His martyrdom informed the Husayni caravan of the political closure of Kufa and the dispersal of supporters. He is therefore a central martyr of the communicative and moral struggle before the battlefield of Karbala. The shared Karbala location is directory inheritance only, not a claim about a grave or place of death. His actual martyrdom occurred in Kufa, and his memory is preserved within the wider geography of the Karbala movement.

Al-Irshad and al-Tabari preserve Qays's repeated messenger role, the letter sent toward Kufa, arrest near al-Qadisiyya, his public declaration from the governor's pulpit and execution before Ashura. The officer is transmitted as al-Husayn ibn Tamim in al-Tabari and as al-Husayn ibn Numayr in other reports. Genealogical sources also vary between Khalid and Khulayd and between Mundhir and Munqidh in the extended pedigree. These variations do not affect the stable identity of Qays as a core pre-Ashura Kufa martyr and envoy of Imam Husayn.

This atlas does not accept or reject a report solely because of an author’s school affiliation. Abu Mikhnaf was an early Kufan collector whose material was also preserved by broad Muslim historians such as al-Tabari; Shaykh al-Mufid was an Imami scholar who used earlier historical material in al-Irshad. Each claim is presented after considering chronological proximity, transmission, shared-source dependence, and comparison with other works.
