Jundab ibn Hujayr al-Khawlani

Source status: Strongly represented in core sources

🌿 Lineage and family background

A Kufan of Yemeni tribal background, with both al-Khawlani and al-Kindi affiliations reported. Later works extend his genealogy to Jundab ibn Hujayr ibn Jundab ibn Zuhayr and present him as a Companion and a participant at Siffin with Imam Ali, Peace Be Upon Him, but caution is required because of possible confusion with Jundab ibn Zuhayr al-Ghamidi.

⚔️ Role in the Karbala movement

An early Kufan Shi'a supporter whom later tradition reports as joining Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, on the road before the encounter with al-Hurr, and who was martyred on Ashura.

Jundab ibn Hujayr al-Khawlani, May Allah Be Pleased With Him, belonged to the Yemeni tribal environment of Kufa. His affiliations appear as al-Khawlani, al-Kindi al-Khawlani, and sometimes simply al-Kindi or al-Kufi, while the middle name is read as Hujayr and Hujr. Later genealogical and biographical works extend his lineage through Jundab ibn Hujayr ibn Jundab ibn Zuhayr and beyond. The same material presents him as one who met the Prophet, Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him, a supporter of Imam Ali, Peace Be Upon Him, and a notable connected with the Kinda and Azd forces at Siffin. An important reason for caution is possible confusion with Jundab ibn Zuhayr al-Ghamidi or al-Azdi, a well-known figure of Siffin whom some reports state was killed in that battle. Jundab ibn Hujayr's companionship, command at Siffin, and extended genealogy are therefore not presented as completely undisputed biography. The early martyr list of al-Fadil ibn al-Zubayr places Jundab among the men of Banu Juwab and immediately follows him with his son, Hujayr ibn Jundab. Al-Shaykh al-Tusi's rijal and later devotional texts also preserve Jundab among the companions of Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, although the reading of the name varies in some copies. Later tradition states that Jundab left Kufa and joined Imam Husayn on the road before the detachment of al-Hurr ibn Yazid had reached the caravan. If accurate, he had entered the Husayni company earlier than the four men who later arrived near Udhayb al-Hijanat. The historical value of this tradition is that it presents Jundab among the older Kufan supporters who reached the Husayni caravan. Rather than assigning him an undocumented separate duty, the secure conclusion is that he made a practical choice to support the Imam during a period of increasing political pressure. His martyrdom on Ashura is preserved both by the early name-list and by later martyr tradition. Later maqtal works place him in the first general assault. The early list also places his son Hujayr among those killed, while the author of Ibsar al-Ayn paused over that detail because he did not find the son separately named in the later ziyarat lists. It is not methodologically sound to merge Jundab's biography with battle stories belonging to Jundab ibn Zuhayr or with other Khawlani and Kindi figures. Similarity of names requires separate source identification. This profile inherits the collective Karbala martyrs location. Jundab's memory preserves older Alid loyalty in Kufa, timely support, and steadfast martyrdom at Karbala; his pre-Karbala biography is presented according to the evidentiary level of each source.

🏛️ Historical importance

Jundab's historical importance lies in older Alid loyalty in Kufa and timely entry into the Husayni caravan. If the report of joining before al-Hurr is correct, he belonged to those who decided before political closure became complete. His biography is also an important case in source criticism. Reports of Prophetic companionship, Siffin, and tribal command are honorable, but possible confusion with Jundab ibn Zuhayr requires separate verification. The shared Karbala location preserves his memory among the collective martyrs. His profile highlights loyalty and martyrdom while carefully distinguishing similar names, tribal affiliations, and later biographical expansion.

The early translated list explicitly records Jundab ibn Hujayr as entry 72 and Hujayr ibn Jundab as his son at entry 73. Rijal al-Tusi and Ibsar al-Ayn support Jundab's association with Imam Husayn and his Karbala martyrdom. Ibsar al-Ayn nevertheless records hesitation about the son's independent attestation in later ziyarat lists. Reports of Prophetic companionship, Siffin command and the extended genealogy remain later material and are kept separate from the stronger Karbala identity because of possible confusion with Jundab ibn Zuhayr al-Ghamidi.

This atlas does not accept or reject a report solely because of an author’s school affiliation. Abu Mikhnaf was an early Kufan collector whose material was also preserved by broad Muslim historians such as al-Tabari; Shaykh al-Mufid was an Imami scholar who used earlier historical material in al-Irshad. Each claim is presented after considering chronological proximity, transmission, shared-source dependence, and comparison with other works.
