Muhammad al-Asghar ibn Ali, Peace Be Upon Him

Source status: Varies across source lists

🌿 Lineage and family background

A son of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib, Peace Be Upon Him, and a paternal brother of Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him. Maqatil al-Talibiyyin describes his mother only as an umm walad; later works offer differing names and sometimes overlap his identity with Abu Bakr ibn Ali, so her identity is not preserved with certainty.

⚔️ Role in the Karbala movement

A Hashimite member of Ahl al-Bayt whose name is preserved in several Karbala martyr lists, who remained with Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, and was martyred on Ashura; possible identity overlap with Abu Bakr ibn Ali remains unresolved.

Muhammad al-Asghar ibn Ali, Peace Be Upon Him, was a son of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib and a paternal brother of Imam Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him. Early and later rosters of the Karbala martyrs record him as Muhammad ibn Ali or Muhammad al-Asghar ibn Ali. The descriptor al-Asghar distinguishes him within genealogical listings from other sons of Ali named Muhammad, but later works do not use the title consistently. Maqatil al-Talibiyyin describes his mother only as an umm walad and does not name her. Later genealogical and biographical works offer different names, but some of these identifications appear to arise from overlap with Abu Bakr ibn Ali. Assigning one named mother with certainty would therefore exceed the surviving evidence. Tasmiyat man qutila ma'a al-Husayn and Maqatil al-Talibiyyin list Muhammad ibn Ali separately among the Hashimite martyrs of Karbala. The sources do not preserve an independent account of his individual stages on the journey from Mecca to Iraq, a speech, or a specific service, but the martyr rosters place him among the family members who remained with Imam Husayn until the final phase. On Ashura, members of the Ahl al-Bayt entered the battlefield after many companions had been killed. No strong early report securely preserves Muhammad al-Asghar's age, a separate rajaz, the exact order of his combat, or a number of opponents he killed. A long heroic narrative should not be manufactured from a short name-list and death notice. Maqatil al-Talibiyyin reports that a man from Banu Aban ibn Darim killed Muhammad ibn Ali and took his head. Some later works add a personal name for the killer or further battle details, but the earlier report is clearest at the level of tribal identification. That is retained as the most cautious historical formulation. The principal difficulty in this profile is possible overlap with Abu Bakr ibn Ali, Peace Be Upon Him. Tasmiyat man qutila ma'a al-Husayn and Maqatil al-Talibiyyin count Muhammad ibn Ali and Abu Bakr ibn Ali separately, while the list of Imam Ali's children in al-Irshad identifies Muhammad al-Asghar by the kunya Abu Bakr. This conflict prevents a definitive resolution, so the two profiles remain separate while Muhammad al-Asghar stays variant and Under Review. Reliable early material does not establish an independent speech, marriage, descendants, or a separate grave for him. His memory survives principally in martyr rosters, the collective suffering of the Ahl al-Bayt, and the shared burial and devotional memory of the Hashimite martyrs of Karbala. This profile inherits the collective Karbala martyrs location and does not create a separate grave, independent shrine, or map marker for Muhammad al-Asghar. His historical importance lies in his inclusion within the loyal Hashimite family that chose sacrifice rather than abandonment of Imam Husayn, while the unresolved identity question is stated openly.

🏛️ Historical importance

Muhammad al-Asghar ibn Ali is historically important because his name is preserved in several rosters of the Hashimite martyrs of Karbala. His individual biography is limited, but the name-list evidence reveals the breadth of the Ahl al-Bayt family group that died with Imam Husayn. This profile is also an important case in source criticism. The mother's identity, possible unity with Abu Bakr ibn Ali, and whether the two names represent separate persons remain disputed, so the limits of early lists and later identifications must be stated clearly. The collective Karbala location preserves his memory without inventing a separate grave. His legacy lies in family loyalty, steadfastness with Imam Husayn, and honest presentation of historical uncertainty.

Tasmiyat man qutila ma'a al-Husayn and Maqatil al-Talibiyyin list Muhammad ibn Ali and Abu Bakr ibn Ali separately. Maqatil describes Muhammad's mother only as an umm walad; the entry begins on p. 90 and the report that a man of Banu Aban ibn Darim killed him continues on p. 91 of the linked digital edition. Al-Irshad identifies Muhammad al-Asghar by the kunya Abu Bakr. Because these identification traditions conflict, the profile remains variant and Under Review.

This atlas does not accept or reject a report solely because of an author’s school affiliation. Abu Mikhnaf was an early Kufan collector whose material was also preserved by broad Muslim historians such as al-Tabari; Shaykh al-Mufid was an Imami scholar who used earlier historical material in al-Irshad. Each claim is presented after considering chronological proximity, transmission, shared-source dependence, and comparison with other works.
